‘The Office’ Banned Halloween Scene Resurfaces: The ‘Koi Pond’ Cold Open NBC Aired Only Once Is Spreading Again Online
‘The Office‘ has always been known for pushing the limits of cringe comedy, and Michael Scott’s worst ideas are a big part of why the series remains a streaming favorite years after it ended. Over nine seasons, the show built a reputation for uncomfortable moments that somehow became beloved.
But one moment went far enough that the network pulled it. A Halloween-themed scene from the sixth season has been making the rounds online this week, reminding viewers that not everything made it through the show’s original run intact.
The clip in question is the cold open to “Koi Pond,” Season 6 Episode 8, which aired on NBC on October 29, 2009. It was shown exactly once, on the night of the premiere, and was removed from reruns afterward, and a fan page’s recent post of the footage has drawn more than 7 million views.
In the cold open, the Dunder Mifflin staff turns the warehouse into a haunted house for their employees’ children, with Daryl leading the kids through the scenes. The setup is classic low-budget office chaos, and Michael Scott, as usual, is the only one taking it seriously, even wearing a wrapped gift box in a nod to a famous ‘SNL’ digital short.
The controversy comes at the end of the tour, when Michael pretends to hang himself in front of the children and then delivers a message about suicide awareness. It is played as an example of Michael’s good intentions and terrible judgment, but it landed very differently with some viewers.
The infamous banned Halloween cold open from The Office that you won’t find on @peacock or @netflix. Michael Scott really had no boundaries. https://t.co/vppKA1PWbv

The scene was removed after complaints about its content. According to one account, the cold open was pulled after the wife of a network executive, who had done work on suicide prevention, asked for it to be taken out. Whatever the exact trigger, the result was lasting. It disappeared from reruns, the DVD release and streaming versions on platforms like Netflix, Peacock and Prime Video.
Jenna Fischer, who played Pam, has also discussed the missing opening on her ‘Office Ladies’ podcast, explaining that the episode originally had the Halloween cold open and that it aired once because the premiere fell the week of Halloween. That is why the episode’s description still hints at a Halloween theme even though the opening isn’t there anymore.
The clip isn’t completely gone. It was uploaded to the show’s official YouTube channel in 2017, shortly before Halloween, and it appears in a compilation of the show’s Halloween openings. It is unclear why the scene was suddenly considered acceptable in that format, but it has remained available there.
The rest of the episode, in which Michael falls into a koi pond during a sales call with Jim, is still intact, and the story it tells hasn’t been changed. It is simply the opening that is missing.

This isn’t the only time the series touched on the subject. In the Season 3 episode “Safety Training,” Michael goes to the roof to talk dramatically about the dangers of depression, and the staff talks him down. According to the episode’s history, the writers thought it was something Michael might do and worked backward from there. That episode remains available, which makes the removal of the ‘Koi Pond’ cold open stand out even more.
The timing makes sense. As Halloween approaches, fans look for seasonal episodes, and a banned scene that most people have never seen is naturally irresistible. The fact that it can’t be found on the major streaming platforms has added to its mystique.
It also reflects how attitudes toward comedy have changed. What aired in 2009 prompted enough backlash to be pulled, and the current reaction shows a mix of curiosity and discomfort.
Do you think the controversial scene should be restored?
