The One Movie Colin Farrell Says Is a Perfect Masterpiece
Colin Farrell has been a favorite of director Martin McDonagh for years. Their partnership started with the 2008 cult hit In Bruges, which earned Farrell a Golden Globe for Best Actor. That collaboration continued with Seven Psychopaths and, most recently, The Banshees of Inisherin, a movie that brought Farrell another Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination.
Even though he didn’t win the Oscar in 2023, Farrell’s career continues to grow. In a conversation with Adam Sandler for The Hollywood Reporter, he reflected on a piece of advice from Pierce Brosnan that shaped him early on.
Right before filming his first American movie, Tigerland, Brosnan gave him a big hug and said to “keep being bold.” Farrell admitted he wasn’t sure if Brosnan really knew him at the time, but the words stuck for decades.
Now 49, Farrell defines boldness as being honest and pursuing what truly matters, even when it’s uncomfortable. “Being bold means going after the things that matter, like being a father or an artist, even when life makes it hard,” he told Sandler. He explained that even when life feels discouraging, the best thing to do is push through.
This approach has influenced the wide variety of roles he chooses. Farrell once shared his five favorite movies with Rotten Tomatoes, from the epic Lawrence of Arabia to the fun of Back to the Future. But the 1987 British comedy-drama Withnail and I stands out for him.
He described it as “a perfect look at the wild energy of its time, with performances that are both hilarious and heartbreaking.” He added that Richard E. Grant’s performance especially moved him, and he called the film a love story between two friends that ends in a very lonely, rainy separation.
Farrell isn’t slowing down anytime soon. He was recently spotted in Hollywood making a late-night grocery run in his pajamas, a relatable moment that went viral as fans eagerly anticipate his upcoming projects.
He’s promoting the second season of his Apple TV+ series Sugar, which premieres on June 19. In the show, he returns as John Sugar, a film-buff private investigator, and will be joined by his real-life friend Shea Whigham.
Beyond television, Farrell is preparing for his return to Gotham. He recently teased that The Batman Part II script is “extraordinary, beautiful, and tasty,” hinting at an exciting continuation of the dark, thrilling world of the Caped Crusader.
Farrell’s career shows a mix of bold choices, memorable performances, and a willingness to embrace a variety of projects. He continues to be one of the most versatile actors working today, finding ways to challenge himself and entertain audiences at the same time.
