Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the arrival of mutants in the MCU, and fans have been picking apart every cameo for clues. Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, fans have anxiously anticipated how Marvel Studios would formally introduce the Children of the Atom to the shared universe. The wait has produced plenty of speculation, and the latest wave is landing just as the studio’s biggest crossover event gets closer.

That event is the two-part finale to the Multiverse Saga. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026, followed by ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027. Both films are directed by the Russo Brothers, from a screenplay by Stephen McFeely.

Now a new rumor is making the rounds. Marvel Updates shared a post on X on Oct. 27 saying that the original ‘X-Men’ cast will reportedly return in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ crediting the leak to scooper @DanielRPK. The post pairs a grid of familiar mutant faces, including Cyclops, Mystique, Beast, Nightcrawler, Magneto and Professor X, with the ‘Secret Wars’ logo.

The claim might sound redundant at first, since a number of the Fox-era actors are already confirmed for the earlier film. Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden and Kelsey Grammer are reprising their roles in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. The whispers suggest that the story for these characters will not wrap up in that movie.

That would run against what some fans have heard recently. Other reports claim ‘Doomsday’ marks the final MCU appearance for the veteran X-Men actors, though a separate rumor says Stewart and McKellen will return as Professor X and Magneto in ‘Secret Wars’ anyway. Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed their appearances, so all of this remains firmly in rumor territory.

Even so, the logic is easy to follow. A ‘Secret Wars’ return would put distance between the original cast’s farewell and Marvel’s planned ‘X-Men’ reboot in 2028. It may also tie into earlier rumors that the studio is saving characters like Storm and Jean Grey for the Multiverse Saga finale.

The reboot itself is already well underway. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said that the company will recast the mutants for its upcoming ‘X-Men’ movie, directed by Jake Schreier, after the events of ‘Secret Wars’. DanielRPK has also reported that the cast of that film is almost complete. That makes ‘Secret Wars’ look like a handoff point, with the old guard bowing out as the new generation steps in.

Feige has been careful with his wording on that front. He avoided calling the change a ‘reboot’ and described ‘Secret Wars’ as a ‘reset’ for the MCU. A reset leaves room for a few last appearances from the actors who defined these characters for fans.

The comics offer plenty of room for that kind of send-off. Jonathan Hickman’s ‘Secret Wars’ will almost certainly serve as the basis for the movie, and that story built a patchwork world out of the leftovers of other realities. Commentators have long argued that one of those realities could easily be a world with the original X-Men in it, which would be a natural fit for a final farewell.

There is still no word on what Stewart, McKellen or any of their teammates might actually do in the film. The report doesn’t reveal what Professor X and Magneto would be doing in ‘Secret Wars’, and the mutant actors in the screenshot’s grid haven’t commented on the latest claim. Until Marvel says otherwise, fans will have to read this as one more intriguing piece of the multiverse puzzle.

For now, the safest bet is to watch what unfolds in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ this December. If the original mutants truly are coming back for round 2 a year later, that film’s ending may leave the first real clues.
