Every star has a story about meeting a childhood hero, but few are as blunt as the one ‘The Pitt’ star Noah Wyle just shared. The Emmy winner has been having a big year, and a new anecdote about Eddie Murphy is adding some humor to it. It also explains why Wyle is so generous with fans today.

Wyle’s 2026 has been packed with milestones. He took home the Emmy for lead actor in a drama series for ‘The Pitt,’ which also won outstanding drama series, and People named him its Sexiest Man Alive. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April, and he picked up a Golden Globe earlier in the year.

With all that recognition, it is fitting that his latest story is about being brushed off. Appearing on the ‘Good Hang with Amy Poehler’ podcast, Wyle recalled a meeting with Murphy when he was just 9 years old. It did not go the way a starstruck kid would have hoped.

Wyle said he was a big fan of Murphy’s work on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and told him so when they met. Murphy responded by asking what Wyle was doing up that late. Wyle then asked for an autograph, and Murphy answered with an expletive, telling the boy to get lost.

Wyle was visibly embarrassed telling it. TheWrap noted that he turned beet red as he relived the moment for Poehler, who was clearly tickled and asked him again how old he had been. He confirmed he was about 9.

The rejection stuck, but it taught Wyle a lesson. He said he always signs an autograph now, and that whenever a 9-year-old asks him for one, he does it as fast as he can. In other words, the sting of that childhood moment turned into a rule for how he treats young fans.

It is a tidy bit of redemption for a story that could have left a bitter taste. Rather than holding a grudge, Wyle has made sure other kids do not feel the way he did.

The story does not stop there. Wyle told it so often at home that his youngest daughter, Frances, decided to give him a different ending. For his birthday last year, the then 10-year-old printed a picture of Murphy and wrote a note on it from “Eddie,” calling Wyle a great kid.

She also spelled Eddie’s name wrong, adding an extra letter, which makes the gift even better. Wyle said she presented it as if she and her mom had met Murphy the day before, and that he now keeps it framed in his office. He called her a doll and the best.

In fairness to Murphy, the timing matters. He is only about 10 years older than Wyle, so he would have been a teenager or in his early twenties at the time, grappling with sudden fame on one of TV’s biggest shows. Many fans online have pointed out that a late-night comedy star dealing with constant attention might not have been at his most patient.

Murphy, who is known for films like ‘Coming to America,’ has not been shown to comment on the story. That leaves Wyle’s version as the only account, and he tells it with good humor.

The anecdote lands because it flips a familiar celebrity story. Instead of a famous person being gracious to a fan, it shows how one brusque moment can shape a person for decades. Wyle, who spent years on ‘ER’ and now plays Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on ‘The Pitt,’ has clearly thought about what it means to be on the other side of that exchange.

He is also a father of 3, with two older children, Owen and Auden, and Frances, which may help explain why he sees these small moments as important. His daughter’s prank shows the family has taken the lesson to heart too.

How would you react if a celebrity refused to give you an autograph?
