For years, fans have noticed that Dolly Parton almost always wears long sleeves. It does not matter if she is on stage, on the red carpet, or doing an interview. Even in warm weather, her arms are usually covered. People have wondered why for a long time, and the answer is more personal than many expect.

According to long-running reports, the country legend uses long sleeves to keep her tattoos private. This idea first gained attention after British comedian Jennifer Saunders shared a story on Australian television.

Saunders later repeated the story in her autobiography, saying Dolly once showed her tattoos during a restaurant visit. She described them as pastel angels, butterflies, and baskets of flowers. Saunders said Dolly asked her not to tell anyone, but the story eventually became public.

Dolly herself has since talked more openly about her tattoos. In an interview with ABC News, she explained that butterflies have always meant a lot to her. She said they remind her of growing up in the Smoky Mountains, getting lost in the woods, and getting in trouble chasing butterflies. That same butterfly theme shows up in her music and even as the logo for her Dollywood park in Tennessee.

Still, Dolly has pushed back on the idea that she is covered in tattoos from shoulder to wrist. During a chat with Larry King, she joked that people imagine something much bigger than reality. She said she has them splattered here and there and made it clear she was not trying to be a biker chick. Fans who pay close attention sometimes spot ink near her wrists, but her upper arms are almost always hidden.

The most honest explanation came later in an interview with Vanity Fair. Dolly shared that her tattoos originally had a medical purpose. She explained that she has a skin condition that causes keloid scars, which can leave dark purple marks. She said that most of the tattoos, when I first started, I was covering up some scars that I had. Using soft colors and gentle designs helped her feel more comfortable in her own skin.

Doctors describe keloids as raised scars caused by too much collagen during healing. They often appear on the shoulders, chest, and neck. These are the exact areas Dolly tends to keep covered. Long sleeves help protect her sensitive skin and allow her to decide when and how much she wants to reveal.

Today, Dolly Parton is still as busy as ever. She is getting ready to open the Dolly Parton Experience at Dollywood, a major new attraction that tells her life story from rural Tennessee to worldwide fame. Even after decades in the spotlight, she continues to set boundaries and share her story on her own terms.
