The Real Reason Halle Berry (59) Stepped Away From Interviews for a Decade
Halle Berry is opening up about why she stayed out of the media spotlight for almost a decade. In a recent interview with The Cut, the 59-year-old actress explained that she intentionally stepped back from interviews because she was frustrated with how the media constantly focused on her personal life instead of her work.
After her third divorce, Berry said the headlines often reduced her to a narrative about failed relationships. “After my third divorce, people started to say, ‘What’s wrong with her? She’s crazy. She can’t keep a man,” she recalled.
She often felt the need to speak for herself, saying, “Who says I want to keep a man if he’s not the right man?” Berry emphasized that this constant scrutiny made her realize she needed to reclaim her own story. Now, Berry says she is in a happy and stable relationship with musician Van Hunt. “I’m in the best relationship I have ever had,” she told The Cut.
She explained that avoiding interviews for nearly ten years gave her space to focus on herself, her happiness, and her family, rather than feeling weighed down by tired media tropes that painted her as a tragic figure. Headlines like “Poor Halle — Unlucky in Love Again” no longer define her.
When asked what her own headlines would be, Berry paused to reflect and offered empowering alternatives. “Hmm. ‘Halle Berry Is Not a Damsel in Distress,’” she said. She continued, “‘Halle Berry Is Not a Victim of Failed Relationships,’” and finished with, “‘Halle Berry Never Said It’s Anyone Else’s Fault.’”
These statements reflect her determination to define her story on her own terms. In addition to her personal growth, Berry has remained very active professionally. She recently starred in the high-energy thriller The Union with Mark Wahlberg, which became a hit on Netflix.
She is also producing and starring in Maude v Maude, an upcoming action-adventure film alongside Angelina Jolie, showing that she continues to take on challenging and high-profile projects.
Berry is also focused on health and wellness through her brand rē•spin, which promotes fitness and mental well-being for women of all ages. She has used her platform to advocate for better support for women in the workforce, especially around menopause, even speaking before Congress to push for meaningful change.
Looking back on her decade-long break, Berry says it allowed her to regain control over her life and her narrative. By stepping away from interviews, she could focus on her career, her relationship with Van Hunt, and projects that matter to her creatively.
Now engaged to Hunt, Berry seems more confident and self-assured than ever. She is proving that she can balance mainstream success with personal fulfillment, all while staying true to herself.
By reclaiming her story, Berry is sending a message that she will no longer let others define her. Her career, her life, and her relationships are now hers to celebrate on her own terms, and she shows that even after decades in Hollywood, it’s never too late to take control of your narrative.
