Movies that make us cry have always fascinated audiences. From the heartbreaking grave scene in Forrest Gump to emotional goodbyes in space like Interstellar, people love films that hit them right in the feels.

There’s something about a perfectly timed emotional moment that can stay with us for years, leaving us reaching for a tissue even long after the credits roll. Now, science has stepped in to figure out which movie scene is truly the saddest.

Researchers at the University of Berkeley conducted a study called Emotion Elicitation Using Films. They screened more than 250 clips for nearly 500 participants to see which moments consistently triggered emotions like fear, anger, and sadness.

Unsurprisingly, horror films like The Shining and The Silence of the Lambs topped the fear category. But for sadness, the results were more surprising. While many people still cry at Bambi’s 1942 scene where the young deer realizes his mother is gone, the study found that the saddest scene in movie history belongs to the 1979 sports drama The Champ.

The Champ stars Jon Voight and nine-year-old Ricky Schroder. The movie follows an aging boxer trying to provide a better life for his young son, T.J. The final scene, where Voight’s character dies after his last fight while his son desperately tries to wake him, triggered the strongest emotional responses in the study.

Researchers explained that this moment produced a more consistent and intense reaction than any other clip in their library.“You don’t even need to watch the whole movie,” the team noted.

The last three minutes are enough to make many viewers break down. It’s a powerful example of grief shown through the eyes of a child, and it remains a benchmark for emotional storytelling in cinema.

Other films still hit hard for viewers looking for a good cry. Beaches, Turner and Hooch, and My Girl all deliver moments that stick with audiences. Many remember Macaulay Culkin’s character in My Girl as one of the most heartbreaking scenes from the 1990s.

Even decades later, these moments continue to pull at people’s hearts. Jon Voight, who earned an Oscar nomination for his role in The Champ, has stayed active in Hollywood. He recently appeared in the 2024 biographical drama Reagan.

He has also been in the news as a “special ambassador” promoting federal tax incentives to bring film production back to the United States. Although The Champ was a remake of a 1931 film, the 1979 version is widely considered the definitive one.

Fans point to the energy between Voight and Schroder, which helps make the final scene so unforgettable. It’s a reminder that while action, horror, and comedy can thrill or entertain, sometimes the most lasting memories from cinema are the moments that make us cry.

Science may have confirmed it, but for anyone who has seen it, the emotional punch of The Champ’s ending is something you never forget. It proves that great filmmaking can make us feel deeply, connect with characters, and carry those feelings with us long after leaving the theater.
