Rhaenyra orders Daemon to investigate, but he refuses in front of the whole Small Council because he wants to look into the deaths of two Gold Cloaks found in Flea Bottom the night before.
Those two deaths turn out to be just the beginning. The two Gold Cloaks had been killed with their intestines pulled out of their bodies to ensure their deaths were painful and graphic, clearly meant as a message to Queen Rhaenyra and the new Targaryen crown.

Cole rejects Gwayne Hightower’s offer of a future in Oldtown, stating a wish to die in glorious battle rather than return to a court that has spurned him.
His situation on the ground is dire. His men are forced to march on foot after falling into a trap of caltrops hidden in the grass, and in a scene of casual horror, Cole is forced to kill his own wounded horse, further dampening the morale of soldiers already considering desertion.
Despite the grim circumstances, Cole remains fixated on his own legacy. He hopes that songs of his valiant end will eventually reach the ears of Queen Alicent, and as he separates from Gwayne and leads his weary men toward an army that outnumbers them 200 to 1, the episode sets a clear course for the fated Butcher’s Ball. Aemond Targaryen’s Recovery Takes a Dark Turn
Away from the bloodshed in King’s Landing and the Riverlands, ‘House of the Dragon’ also checks in on Aemond Targaryen, who is still recovering from his stabbing at Harrenhal. Alys informs him that Rhaenyra has taken King’s Landing, that Aegon is believed dead, and that Aemond himself killed his own brother, a revelation that leaves him in tears.
