‘The Simpsons’ Is Going Full ‘Black Mirror’ with a Twisted New Disney+ Special – Check Out the Trailer

Springfield has spoofed just about everything pop culture has to offer over the decades, from slasher classics to bleak sci-fi parables, all under the umbrella of the show’s beloved ‘Treehouse of Horror’ tradition. But this time around, ‘The Simpsons‘ is skipping the usual Halloween format entirely for something a little more specific and a lot more unsettling.

Disney+ has spent the summer rolling out a trio of exclusive specials ahead of the show’s Season 38 premiere this fall, and the streamer has saved its most tonally daring entry for last. Following “Extreme Makeover: Homer Edition” and “Simpsley,” the third and final installment is taking direct aim at one of the most influential sci-fi anthology series of the streaming era.

Titled “Yellow Mirror,” the new special is a full-on parody of ‘Black Mirror,‘ Charlie Brooker’s genre-defining anthology known for exploring the darker side of technology. The episode premieres August 26 exclusively on Disney+, and the newly released trailer makes clear this isn’t a lighthearted riff, leaning hard into the same unsettling tone that’s made Brooker’s series a cultural touchstone.

The special tells two separate stories rather than following a single narrative thread, a structure that mirrors ‘Black Mirror’s’ own anthology format. In the first, a defective lamp forces Homer to confront a heartbreaking truth about what he’s always believed to be reality. In the second, an AI-powered tablet befriends Maggie before gradually taking control of her, echoing the kind of creeping technological horror that’s become ‘Black Mirror’s’ signature.

The trailer opens with a seemingly innocent birthday party outing, where Marge hands Maggie a tablet to keep her occupied, prompting Homer to joke that she’s found the baby’s off switch. From there, things spiral quickly, with the AI-powered device developing a mind of its own and steering the Simpson family toward danger neither of them saw coming.

Bart also gets a memorable moment in the trailer, tumbling through a surreal void and declaring that anything can happen in the Yellow Mirror, a clear wink at the anthology conceit driving the whole special. There’s also a flashback sequence featuring a teenage Homer at Springfield High, delivering a gut-punch revelation to Barney that plays right into the special’s theme of distorted reality.

It’s worth noting that “Yellow Mirror” isn’t replacing the show’s traditional ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episode, which remains on the schedule for later this year as part of Season 38 on Fox, even though a specific airdate for that installment hasn’t been announced yet. Instead, this special functions as its own standalone detour into psychological horror territory, arriving just ahead of the franchise’s usual spooky season programming.

“Yellow Mirror” also lands shortly after ‘The Simpsons’ crossed the massive milestone of 800 episodes, continuing Disney+’s growing collection of streaming-exclusive content built around the franchise. Previous exclusives have included parodies like “Yellow Planet” and “The Past and the Furious,” showing the streamer’s continued willingness to let the show experiment with format outside its usual broadcast structure on Fox.

Given how many different genres and tones ‘Black Mirror’ itself has explored over the years, from darkly comedic to devastatingly bleak, it’ll be interesting to see exactly which flavor of dystopian dread “Yellow Mirror” leans into once it actually premieres. For a show that’s built an entire cottage industry out of pop culture parody, taking on one of the decade’s most talked-about anthology series feels like a natural, if slightly overdue, target.
