The Single Comic Book Movie James Gunn Called Perfect
James Gunn knows superhero movies better than most people in Hollywood. He has worked on major projects for both Marvel and DC, and that experience is one of the reasons Warner Bros. hired him as co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. Now, he is in charge of shaping a brand-new era of DC films.
Because of his background, fans tend to listen closely when Gunn shares his opinions. In a past interview with GQ, Gunn spoke openly about his favorite comic book movies. During that conversation, he made it clear that one film stands above the rest. He said the 2016 movie Deadpool is perfect.
Gunn explained that both Deadpool movies are among his favorite comic book adaptations. The first film, directed by Tim Miller, stars Ryan Reynolds as a sarcastic mercenary who gains immortality and constantly talks directly to the audience. Gunn said the movie arrived shortly after his own Guardians of the Galaxy films and managed to push comedy even further.
According to Gunn, the humor in Deadpool works so well because it stays true to the comic books. He praised the movie for matching the rude, self-aware tone of the source material and called it a very loyal adaptation. He added that the film does not rely only on jokes. Despite all the chaos and nonstop gags, the story still feels grounded.
Gunn also pointed out that the movie has more heart than people might expect. He said it manages to feel real and emotional, even with all the outrageous humor. That balance of comedy and sincerity is something he finds rare in superhero films.
He also had strong praise for Ryan Reynolds, placing him in the same league as actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Reeve when it comes to perfectly casting a comic book character.
The Deadpool franchise has only grown since then. After the success of Deadpool and Wolverine in 2024, which brought Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, the character has become one of Marvel’s biggest draws. Gunn’s comments help explain why Deadpool continues to connect so strongly with fans.
Ryan Reynolds has stayed busy outside the red suit as well. He is set to star in the action comedy Mayday with Kenneth Branagh, which is scheduled to arrive on Apple TV+ later this year. He is also reportedly developing a fourth Deadpool movie while producing projects through his company, Maximum Effort, and running his business ventures, including Wrexham AFC.
At the same time, Gunn is focused on building the future of DC. After the release of Superman in 2025, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, he is now overseeing upcoming projects like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
