‘The Surgeon’ Star Martin Freeman (55) Secretly Weds Rachel Benaissa (34), and Their Rings Gave It Away
Martin Freeman has spent most of his career in the public eye, but he has always kept his private life remarkably quiet. The actor best known as Tim in ‘The Office’, Dr. John Watson in ‘Sherlock’ and Bilbo Baggins in ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy rarely appears with a partner on a red carpet, and he seldom talks about home life in interviews.
That made a recent evening in London all the more surprising. Freeman and his partner of six years, French writer-actress Rachel Benaissa, stepped out together at the BFI London Film Festival, and the cameras caught more than the usual red-carpet smiles.
Freeman, 55, and Benaissa, 34, arrived at the festival’s gala screening of ‘A Long Winter’ at the Royal Festival Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Freeman was there to promote the new Andrew Haigh drama, alongside co-stars including Fred Hechinger and Caitríona Balfe. He wore a gold band on his ring finger, and Benaissa wore a large emerald engagement ring flanked by two diamonds, along with a gold wedding band.
The rings set off speculation almost immediately. A spokesperson for Freeman then confirmed to The Sun that the couple had married, with reports saying the wedding took place privately earlier this year. Details of the ceremony remain under wraps.
The pair first connected in 2020, and the relationship became public the following year. They have been tight-lipped ever since, making only a handful of red-carpet appearances, including the 2025 Olivier Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.
Benaissa was born in Toulouse, France, and is based in London. She works as an actress, writer and producer, and she has also been credited under the name Rachel Mariam. Her screen credits include a small role in the BBC drama ‘Normal People’, a part in Aisling Bea’s Channel 4 comedy ‘This Way Up’ and a role in the Netflix film ‘Irish Wish’ with Lindsay Lohan.
Behind the camera, she has written for several shorts and for the TV movie ‘Dare to Say Yes’. She is currently working on a short film called ‘A Tiny Thing’. It’s a creative career that runs alongside Freeman’s, with the two reportedly sharing a love of film.

Freeman has given only rare glimpses of their life together. On Jessie Ware’s food podcast ‘Table Manners’, he joked about Benaissa’s love of cheese and wine and described cooking together as one of their favorite things to do. It was a lighthearted peek into a relationship the couple has kept largely private.
Freeman was previously in a relationship with actress Amanda Abbington from 2000 to 2016, and the pair share two children, Joe and Grace. In January, Freeman brought Joe along with Benaissa to the UK premiere of ‘Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials’, giving fans a rare glimpse of their family dynamic. Many observers noted how comfortable the group appeared together.
That moment fits the pattern of a relationship kept out of the spotlight, with only occasional appearances at events tied to Freeman’s work. It also explains why the festival outing caught so much attention. Seeing the two together at a major gala, with rings in view, turned a quiet announcement into the weekend’s celebrity news.

The 70th BFI London Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 7 to 18, features 251 titles from 88 countries. For a couple who work in film, it was a fitting setting for a rare public moment. Freeman’s film, ‘A Long Winter’, is one of the festival’s gala presentations alongside new work from directors including Danny Boyle and Martin McDonagh.
Neither Freeman nor Benaissa has made a public statement beyond the confirmation, and no wedding photos have been released. For now, the rings on the red carpet are the only visual proof of the news.
