The story of the two Veronese lovers from feuding families whose forbidden love ends in tragedy is one of the most famous stories ever told in the history of literature. And while there are several versions of the story, the tragedy Romeo and Juliet by the great William Shakespeare is the most famous one.

One of Shakespeare’s best and most famous works, Romeo and Juliet has been adapted numerous times, both on the stage and on the screen. Some of these versions are well-known works and as you might know, a new version is coming up.

The new adaptation will be a musical and it will draw inspiration from the actual story that inspired Shakespeare’s tragedy. The movie is set to premiere this year and we have some details for you!

The movie is going to be titled Juliet & Romeo, a change from the usual title, but as we’ve said, the movie will be inspired by the original story rather than simply being an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. The movie is planned as the first part of an epic, grand-scale musical trilogy that is set to show the story of the two lovers in a majestic way.

The movie will star Black Mirror alum Clara Rugaard and The Last Supper star Jamie Ward as the titular characters, while the rest of the cast will include some major names like Jason Isaacs (Lord Montague), Dan Fogler (The Apothecary), Rebel Wilson (Lady Capulet), Rupert Everett (Lord Capulet), Derek Jacobi (The Friar), Rupert Graves (Prince Escalaus), and other.

The first images reveal a very rich, yet different take on the production design, which will align with writer-director Timothy Scott Bogart’s vision of Verona. We also know that the original songs for the musical will be handled by his Grammy Award-winning brother, Evan Kidd Bogart, responsible for some major hits, like Beyoncé’s “Halo.”

As we know at this moment, the movie will have its premiere in British theaters for one night only on June 11, along with a special pre-recorded Q&A featuring a mix of the film’s rising stars and industry veterans. A wide release has not been scheduled yet.
