‘The Whisper Man’ Just Cracked Netflix’s Top Movie Launches of the Year, and Robert De Niro Deserves Some Credit

Netflix has had a genuinely stacked year for original movies, with titles like ‘The Rip,’ ‘War Machine,’ and ‘Apex’ all racking up massive viewership numbers throughout 2026. Against that kind of competition, breaking into the platform’s upper tier of debuts isn’t easy, especially for a psychological thriller without a built-in franchise name attached.

That’s exactly what makes the latest addition to Netflix’s crime catalog stand out. ‘The Whisper Man,’ the Russo Brothers-produced thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, and Michelle Monaghan, premiered on the platform on August 28 and immediately started climbing the charts in a way few late-summer releases manage.

Now the numbers are in, and they’re impressive. ‘The Whisper Man’ debuted as the sixth biggest movie launch of 2026 with 23.2 million views in its opening window, placing it just behind ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ but ahead of Kevin Hart’s ’72 Hours’ among this year’s field of Netflix originals.

Based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, ‘The Whisper Man’ follows widowed true-crime writer Tom Kennedy, played by Scott, whose young son goes missing in a way that eerily mirrors the crimes of an infamous serial killer imprisoned decades earlier. Desperate to find him, Tom turns to his estranged father, Peter Willis, played by De Niro, a retired detective with his own complicated history tied to the original case.

Directed by James Ashcroft, the film marks Netflix’s sixth collaboration with the Russo brothers’ production company, AGBO, a partnership that has become one of the streamer’s more reliable pipelines for mid-budget genre hits. That track record likely helped ‘The Whisper Man’ find an audience quickly, even as reception among critics and viewers has reportedly been mixed since its release.

The film’s opening numbers also stack up notably well against past entries in the crime and mystery genre. When measured against titles like ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,’ ‘The Killer,’ and ‘Leave the World Behind,’ ‘The Whisper Man’ held its own within a group of eleven comparable thrillers that combined for a staggering total of well over 277 million views across their opening weeks.

Despite its strong showing, ‘The Whisper Man’ wasn’t quite Netflix’s top story of the week. That distinction went to ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,’ Rockstar’s gameplay preview that outpaced every other title on the platform, pushing the De Niro-led thriller into the number two spot for the same viewing period.

Still, being edged out by one of the most anticipated gaming reveals in recent memory doesn’t diminish just how strong a showing this was for a straightforward crime thriller with no existing franchise behind it. With Netflix’s daily top 10 charts showing the film continuing to grow its reach throughout its first week and into the following days, ‘The Whisper Man’ appears to have real staying power beyond just a splashy opening.

Between De Niro’s star power, Scott’s growing reputation in the genre space following his work on ‘Severance,’ and the Russo Brothers’ backing, the film had plenty of ingredients working in its favor from the start. Whether that momentum holds as word of mouth settles in remains to be seen, but for now, ‘The Whisper Man’ has firmly staked its claim among 2026’s biggest streaming launches.
