Filming for The White Lotus season 4 is now in full swing at the Cannes Film Festival in France, and new set photos have revealed a more glamorous and celebrity-focused direction for the HBO hit series.

According to early reports from production sources and behind-the-scenes images, the new season appears to place its characters directly inside the world of international fame, red carpets, and film industry events.

Laura Dern has been spotted filming on location at Cannes alongside Chris Messina, Marissa Long, and Charlie Hall. Dern was previously announced as the replacement for Helena Bonham Carter, who exited the project early in production. In the scenes filmed on May 26, the group appeared dressed in formal outfits, walking the steps of the festival venue as if attending a major premiere. Based on the setup, Dern seems to be playing a public figure attending the festival with her on-screen family.

The Cannes setting gives the show a fresh backdrop compared to earlier seasons, which took place in luxury resorts. This time, the focus appears to shift toward celebrity culture and the pressure that comes with public attention. The production has been described as mixing the show’s usual themes of wealth and tension with the world of entertainment elites gathered at one of the most famous film festivals in the world.

A surprising detail from the shoot is the appearance of a Survivor contestant making a cameo. Series creator Mike White had already hinted that a Survivor player would appear in season 4, and that moment now seems confirmed with Charlie Day spotted on set near Dern and the main cast. The crossover adds a playful, meta layer to the new season, blending reality television personalities with the fictional world of The White Lotus.

Other cast members including AJ Michalka and Chloe Bennet were also seen filming separate scenes during the same day at the festival venue. All were dressed in formal wear, suggesting multiple storylines unfolding across the Cannes setting.

The production shift to France was confirmed earlier this year when HBO announced that season 4 would be set in Europe. Reports pointed to luxury locations in the French Riviera, including historic hotels and high-end resorts. Executive comments from HBO hinted that the new season would move away from the “crashing waves against rocks” style of earlier locations, focusing instead on a different kind of luxury environment.

Series creator Mike White has continued to develop the show’s direction while keeping most plot details secret. However, he has previously said that there is always room for new twists and even more shocking storylines in future seasons. His approach has kept expectations high, especially after the success of earlier seasons.

The casting process for season 4 has also seen major changes. Helena Bonham Carter’s departure led to a rewrite of her character, with HBO stating that the role “did not align once on set” and would be reworked. Laura Dern stepped into the part shortly after.

Meanwhile, behind-the-scenes updates suggest that season 4 is continuing the show’s pattern of mixing dark drama with social satire. With Cannes as its backdrop and a mix of Hollywood actors and reality TV personalities, the new season is shaping up to be one of the most unusual entries in the series so far.
