‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Sparked a Massive Surge in Thailand Tourism Interest
Film and television productions often have a direct impact on real-world travel trends, especially when popular shows are filmed in visually striking locations. In recent years, viewers have increasingly chosen holiday destinations based on what they see on screen, turning entertainment into a major driver of tourism.
One of the clearest recent examples comes from the HBO series The White Lotus, which has helped push international interest in Thailand to new levels after its third season was filmed across several locations in the country.
According to reporting from Variety, Thailand experienced a major tourism boost following the release of the season. Travel bookings to the country increased by around 300 percent, while online searches for Thailand rose by 88 percent after the show aired. The data highlights how strongly the series influenced global audience behavior.
Season 3 of The White Lotus was filmed in multiple Thai locations, including the Four Seasons Resort in Ko Samui, as well as parts of Bangkok and Phuket. These locations became central to the show’s visuals and story setting, attracting attention from viewers around the world.
Sunanta Kangvalkulkul, director-general of Thailand’s Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), spoke about the impact during the Cannes Film Market. She told Variety that the production brought approximately 36.5 million dollars in local spending and created around 1,000 jobs for local crew members.
She said, “This is the right direction that the government has decided to support.”
Thailand has been actively encouraging international film productions through financial incentives. The country offers a 30 percent cash rebate for foreign productions, with no strict spending cap or requirement to use local content. Officials say this approach has helped attract major global projects.

Kangvalkulkul also noted that the government has supported around 86 local productions with approximately 6.7 million dollars in funding, alongside its international strategy to bring more global filming to the country.
She explained, “We work really closely between the Thai filming and entertainment industry and also the Thai government agency. It’s not just the Ministry of Commerce.”
Industry experts say Thailand’s combination of scenic locations, production support, and tax incentives has made it one of the most attractive filming destinations in Southeast Asia. Other major productions filmed there recently include Jurassic World Rebirth and Alien: Earth, further boosting the country’s visibility in global entertainment.
David Bernad, producer of The White Lotus, previously explained that Thailand was chosen after considering several potential filming locations. He said, “We didn’t know much about Thailand. I had been there once before, but when we boiled down countries that worked weather-wise, had a tax rebate, were film friendly, and really, it was just only Thailand in that region.”
He added, “So, we were like, ‘Oh, we’ll go to Thailand first, and we’ll go on to Japan.”
The success of season 3 has already raised expectations for future installments. The next season of the series is expected to be filmed in France, with production reportedly using the Cannes Film Festival area as part of its backdrop.
As interest continues to grow, The White Lotus remains a strong example of how television can influence real-world tourism, turning filming locations into global travel hotspots.
