‘The White Lotus’ Star Aubrey Plaza (41) Says She Nearly Married Michael Cera (37) in Shocking Confession
Aubrey Plaza revealed that she once came very close to marrying Michael Cera during their earlier relationship.
Plaza talked about it while appearing on the podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. During the conversation, Bateman mentioned her past relationship with Cera, which led Plaza to share a surprising story from their time together.
She explained that the two once went on a road trip and ended up in Las Vegas with a plan that was not very serious at first. She said they were under the influence of edibles and thought it would be funny to get married and then quickly divorce just so they could call each other ex-husband and ex-wife.
Plaza described how the plan almost happened in real life. She said, “We almost got married. We drove across the country together, eating a bag of edibles, and we drove to Vegas with a plan to get married and then get divorced right away so we could call each other our ex-wife and ex-husband forever. We thought that would be a really good bit.”
The moment did not happen in the end. Plaza said things became too overwhelming when they reached the marriage office. She explained that they felt nervous and changed their minds. She said, “I think it was a combination of being too high and paranoid. We got in line at the county office or something, and then everyone started running, and we ran. We bailed.”
Plaza and Cera met while working on the 2010 film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. They later dated for about a year and a half before going their separate ways. Both eventually married other partners later in life.
Cera is now married and has children, while Plaza was previously married to filmmaker Jeff Baena. Baena passed away in 2025, a loss Plaza has spoken about publicly.
More recently, it was reported that Plaza is expecting her first child with actor Christopher Abbott. During the podcast, she also spoke about motherhood and said, “It just seems so interesting, that whole thing.”
The story has gained attention online because of how unusual the near-wedding situation was. Fans have reacted with surprise, especially given how casual the plan was at the time.
This story shows how unpredictable young relationships in Hollywood can be, especially when people are still figuring things out in their early careers. It also feels like one of those moments that sounds funny now but could have changed things completely if it actually happened. What do you think about this story from Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera?
