The X-Men Just Got Their Biggest Spotlight Yet in the New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Trailer
Marvel spent years dangling the idea of Fox’s original X-Men actors stepping back into their old roles before ever confirming anything concrete. Between multiversal cameos in other films and a steady drip of casting rumors, fans had every reason to wonder whether these characters would ever get a real moment in the spotlight.
That wait has been building toward something much bigger than a quick cameo. With Marvel Studios finally releasing the full trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the X-Men have now received their most substantial screen time yet, giving fans a genuine sense of how these characters fit into the film’s sprawling multiverse crossover.
The new footage picks up right where earlier teasers left off, expanding on the reunion between Charles Xavier and Magneto inside the X-Mansion. Xavier is shown looking out a window as a massive red glow approaches the building, a moment some fans have already theorized could be tied to an Incursion event, something previously referenced but never fully shown on screen in the franchise.
That sense of dread carries directly into Magneto’s return as well. In earlier footage, McKellen’s Magneto delivers a somber meditation on mortality, musing that death comes for everyone and that the real question is not whether someone is prepared to die, but who they will be when they finally close their eyes. That tone sets up the reunion between Xavier and Magneto as something heavier than simple nostalgia.
Perhaps no X-Men character benefits more from this new trailer than Cyclops. James Marsden’s Cyclops is shown blasting through a door inside a disheveled X-Mansion, tearing off his visor mid-battle to unleash a full-force optic blast, giving fans their clearest look yet at his comic-accurate costume and abilities. After years of being sidelined in the earlier Fox films, this new footage finally treats the character like the leader he has always been in the source material.
Mystique’s role in the trailer adds another layer of chaos to the mix. Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova finds herself in an intense showdown against Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique, who shifts into Yelena’s own likeness and forces her to fight a literal doppelganger of herself. Given Mystique’s long history of transforming into iconic characters throughout the franchise, using an Avenger as her latest disguise signals just how directly these two universes are about to collide.
Channing Tatum’s Gambit also factors heavily into the new footage, squaring off against Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi in one of the trailer’s more visually striking action beats. Pairing a character introduced through ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ with an Avenger who debuted in his own solo MCU film only underscores how thoroughly this movie is blending previously separate corners of Marvel’s franchise history.
Taken together, these X-Men moments suggest Marvel is not simply parading out familiar faces for fan service. Every beat, from Xavier’s ominous window gaze to Cyclops finally cutting loose, plays into a larger narrative about mutants being pulled into a fight that could reshape their entire universe.
Which X-Men return in Avengers: Doomsday are you most excited to see?
With Doctor Doom positioned as a threat capable of tearing through the multiverse itself, giving the X-Men this much dedicated screen time signals just how central they are expected to be to the film’s overall stakes. This is not a brief cameo tucked into a bigger ensemble; it is a genuine storyline running parallel to everything else happening across the movie.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, this expanded X-Men footage has fans more convinced than ever that Marvel’s mutant era is about to become a defining part of the franchise’s future.
