This Matt Damon ‘Team America’ Odysseus Costume Might Be the Best Halloween Mashup of the Year
Every Halloween produces a few costumes that rise above the pack, whether through sheer effort or pure absurdity. Then there are the rare ones that manage both. This year, one creator has turned a movie puppet, a Greek epic and a 3D printer into a viral moment.
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey‘ arrived in theaters on July 17, 2026, with Matt Damon as the hero Odysseus. It quickly became a fixture of Halloween conversation, ranking in the top 10 of Google’s annual Frightgeist rankings for most-searched costumes. Costume guides describe Odysseus’ look as weathered leather armor, a red-crested helmet and a draped cloak.
Now the Matt Damon Halloween costume built by prop maker Freddy Schramm, who posts as FreddyProps, is drawing attention for taking the idea in a very different direction. In a short video, he stands in a workshop lit in purple, wearing leather-style armor with gauntlets and topped with an oversized, puppet-like head of Damon. The face is a sculpted mask with sunken eyes and a wavy swoop of hair, and the whole thing is a mashup of two very different versions of the actor.

Schramm explained on TikTok that he was going to be Matt Damon as the character from ‘Team America: World Police’, dressed as Odysseus from ‘The Odyssey’. The hashtags attached to his video series point directly to ‘Team America: World Police’, and the oversized, puppet-like head leans into that joke. Combining it with Nolan’s serious epic is what makes the costume so funny.
His build log shows how much work went into it. He sculpted the head, printed a mold on a 3D printer and tested the process on a small scale by casting a foam version. Then he moved on to a full-size head that stands about 2 feet tall.
The mask is more than a static prop. Schramm shared updates showing animatronics that he 3D printed on a Bambu Lab H2D printer, and he used a DIY lattice technique in Blender combined with a homemade jaw mechanism. Every part was printed on his own machines, according to his posts.
That level of engineering helps explain why the video has traveled so far. The face moves in a way that feels slightly uncanny, which suits the humor of the original puppet. At one point he joked that the mask’s expression was creeping him out after he gave it a glossy coat of base paint.
To complete the Odysseus half of the costume, Schramm printed a giant helmet to match the mask’s oversized proportions. He said he did not use a single drop of paint on it. The result echoes the red-crested helmet from the film, scaled up to fit a head twice as large as a normal one.
The armor itself keeps close to the movie’s dark, battered style. In the clip, the tunic and gauntlets are in muted gray tones, with red accents that give a nod to the red plume. It is a deliberately silly contrast to the grim, dirt-streaked look Nolan used in his version of Greece.
The humor works on several levels. ‘The Odyssey’ is a very serious film that casts Damon alongside Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena and Anne Hathaway as Penelope. It marks the third collaboration between Damon and Nolan after ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Oppenheimer’.
Putting a puppet’s oversized face on a prestige epic is a comedic collision. It is also a reminder of how many different pop culture images follow a single star around. For fans who know both references, the combination is the kind of joke that rewards being very online.
Schramm’s project is a good example of how much homemade effort can outshine store-bought options. While retailers sell Odysseus armor, nobody sells an animatronic puppet head of Damon. The video shows how a creator can use modern tools to bring a joke to life in a way that costumes from a bag simply cannot.
Whether or not it truly won Halloween, the costume has clearly landed with viewers who appreciate both the craftsmanship and the absurdity. It also proves that the best costumes are often the ones that make people laugh before they can explain why.
