Jude Law has admitted that starring in the 2004 remake of Alfie is one of the choices he regrets most in his career.

The film, directed by Charles Shyer, was a modern take on the 1966 classic that originally starred Michael Caine. Law hoped the role would elevate his career in a similar way, but the result left him disappointed.

Speaking to British GQ in 2024, Law described the movie as “a little light, a little too cheesy.” He also admitted that the financial aspect of the film didn’t help. “I think it was made for too much money, and I was probably paid too much money, which I underestimated at the time,” he said.

In the 2004 version, Law played a charming Cockney cab driver navigating life and relationships in Manhattan. While the original Alfie addressed serious issues like unplanned fatherhood and illness, Law’s version focused on a more carefree romantic comedy story. Critics gave mixed reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the film a 48% rating, noting that the remake lacked the charm and wit of the original. Metacritic scored it 49 out of 100, calling the reception “mixed or average.”

Despite the criticism, some reviewers found redeeming qualities. Roger Ebert praised Law’s performance, saying it was “funny at times and finally sad and sweet.” Variety called it “a breezy, sexy romp with a conscience,” and Entertainment Weekly gave the movie a B−, noting that Law had all the attributes of a movie star but could have used “more anger” to enhance his presence.

Law admitted that taking Alfie soon after receiving another Oscar nomination for Cold Mountain was a mistake. “I was in a really strong position [at that time]…for Alfie to be the film I chose to do quite soon after that, I think was a bad move,” he said.

He also acknowledged that the film didn’t elevate the material as he had hoped and that he “kicked himself” for choosing a role that leaned into his heartthrob image.

While the movie remains part of his filmography, Law’s reflections show that even successful actors can misjudge a project. Alfie may not have had the same cultural impact as Caine’s version, but it offers a look into the risks actors take when balancing career moves with personal taste.

Tt’s interesting to see stars like Jude Law openly admit regrets about certain roles. It reminds us that not every high-profile opportunity guarantees a hit, and even talented actors can misstep. What do you think about actors revisiting their past choices? Share your thoughts in the comments.
