Three Legendary Directors Who Have Openly Criticized Steven Spielberg
Steven Spielberg is one of the most successful directors in film history. He has won three Academy Awards and made some of the biggest movies ever. Along with George Lucas, he helped change Hollywood and push the use of modern visual effects. Many filmmakers look up to him, but not everyone in the industry shares that admiration.
Over the years, a few well-known European directors have openly criticized his work. Their opinions show a clear divide between mainstream success and more artistic, experimental filmmaking styles.
Jean-Luc Godard, a major figure in the French New Wave, was especially critical when speaking to Film Comment. He dismissed Schindler’s List and questioned Spielberg’s ability to handle serious subjects.
“He’s not very intelligent,” Godard said, also calling the film a “phony result.” He even compared Spielberg to classic director William Wyler, suggesting Spielberg fell short in both depth and skill.
Another French filmmaker, Jacques Rivette, shared similar feelings. He didn’t hold back when talking about Spielberg, saying “he can’t direct his way out of a paper bag,” and using even harsher language to describe him.
These comments reflected a strong dislike for Spielberg’s style, which they saw as too commercial and not artistic enough. The most extreme reaction came from Alejandro Jodorowsky, known for films like El Topo. He made his feelings very clear, saying, “I hate Spielberg.”
His comments went even further, as he once said, “If I can kill Spielberg, I will kill Spielberg.” His words stood out because of how intense and personal they were compared to those of other critics.
Even with these harsh opinions, Spielberg’s career has continued to grow. As of now, he is still working on major projects. His upcoming film Disclosure Day is set to release on June 12 and will focus on humanity discovering alien life.
The movie stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo. Early previews suggest a serious story about how the world reacts to this kind of discovery.
He is also involved in television. Spielberg is an executive producer on the Apple TV+ series Cape Fear, a psychological thriller starring Javier Bardem. The show, which also has Martin Scorsese as a producer, is expected to premiere on June 5.
Even after decades in the industry, Spielberg remains a major figure in film. While some directors continue to criticize his work, his influence and success are hard to ignore. His films still attract huge audiences, and his name continues to be part of important conversations about cinema.
