Denis Villeneuve has spent the better part of a decade building his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s ‘Dune‘ saga into one of the defining sci-fi trilogies of this generation. What started as a single ambitious film in 2021 has grown into a sprawling, multi-chapter epic that fans have followed with increasing devotion.

That devotion was on full display Wednesday at a global IMAX fan event unveiling the newest trailer for ‘Dune: Part Three,’ simulcast across cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, London, Berlin, Mexico City, and Abu Dhabi. The footage marked the most extensive look yet at the trilogy’s final chapter.

Amid the excitement, star Timothée Chalamet took a moment to publicly praise Villeneuve for the sheer pace at which he has delivered the trilogy, according to Variety’s coverage of the event. “He could’ve taken years in between these projects. Instead, he buckled in and we got it done right away,” Chalamet said during the event, comparing the achievement favorably to Peter Jackson’s original ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

Chalamet went further, admitting he could not recall the last time a filmmaker had completed three major projects so consecutively without significant gaps in between. He capped off the tribute with a simple show of faith in his director, telling the crowd “I am so grateful for Denis. In Denis we trust.”

Villeneuve offered his own reflection on the journey when an audience member in Dallas asked what advice he might give his younger self back when the project began in 2019. “Sleep as much as you can,” he quipped, before turning more sincere and calling the decade spent bringing the trilogy to life “the privilege of my life.”

The event also included a personal touch for attendees, as Chalamet revealed that an envelope had been placed under one seat in every participating theater. Whoever finds it will receive a private screening of ‘Dune: Part Three’ for themselves and their friends once the film opens in theaters this December.

Beyond the sentimental moments, Chalamet also touched on the emotional core of the story itself, discussing the strained relationship between his character Paul Atreides and Zendaya’s Chani following Paul’s betrayal and marriage to another woman. He credited Villeneuve’s handling of that dynamic as central to tying the larger story together, while praising Zendaya’s expanded performance in the upcoming film.

‘Dune: Part Three’ adapts Frank Herbert’s novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and picks up seventeen years after the events of ‘Part Two,’ following Paul as he grapples with the consequences of ruling as emperor of the known universe. The film brings back Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, and Florence Pugh, whose role as Princess Irulan expands significantly, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy reprising her role as Alia Atreides.
