Toho has made it official: a new “Godzilla” movie is on the way. The studio revealed the title “Godzilla -0.0” (read as “Godzilla Minus Zero”) during this year’s Godzilla Fest in Tokyo and confirmed the news through its official X account.

The upcoming film brings back Yamazaki Takashi, who will once again handle writing, directing, and visual effects supervision. The VFX will be done by Shirogumi, with production led by Toho Studios and Robot, the same team behind the 2023 hit “Godzilla Minus One.”

Toho Co., Ltd. will produce and distribute the movie. The studio had teased a new “Godzilla” project about a year ago, and fans have been waiting ever since for an update.

Yamazaki’s previous film, “Godzilla Minus One,” turned out to be a huge success. It earned more than 7.65 billion yen (around $50 million) in Japan, making it the most profitable live-action Japanese “Godzilla” film ever made. In North America, it brought in $56 million, setting a record as the highest-grossing Japanese-language live-action film released in the U.S.

The movie also made history at the 96th Academy Awards by winning the Oscar for Best Visual Effects — the first “Godzilla” film ever nominated for an Academy Award and the first Japanese movie to win in that category.

“Godzilla Minus One” was set in post–World War II Japan and followed Shikishima Koichi, a former kamikaze pilot played by Kamiki Ryunosuke, who faces both his trauma and the terror of Godzilla’s return. The film featured a strong cast that included Hamabe Minami, Yamada Yuki, Aoki Munetaka, Yoshioka Hidetaka, Ando Sakura, and Sasaki Kuranosuke.

Now, with “Godzilla -0.0,” Toho seems to be building on that story. The title suggests the film might serve as a fresh start or a continuation of the “Minus” concept introduced in the previous movie. No plot details or release date have been revealed yet, but excitement among fans is already growing for what’s next from the King of the Monsters.
