Tom Cruise Gives ‘Top Gun 3’ Fans a Playfully Vague Update
Few sequels have had a bigger runway than ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘. The follow-up to the original film made $1.5 billion and won an Oscar. It was released 36 years after the 1986 original and became the highest-grossing film of Cruise’s career.
A third film has been the obvious next question ever since. Reports first surfaced in January 2024 that a third film was in development, but Paramount only made it official at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026, with Cruise confirmed to return as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also back, and the studio said a script is underway.
Now Cruise himself has weighed in, in typically cryptic fashion. During a recent appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show promoting his new movie ‘Digger’, Cruise offered a new update on ‘Top Gun 3’, addressing it for the first time since his return was officially confirmed.
“Maverick’s going to be in it. There’s going to be fighter jets. It’s going to be cool. There’s going to be cool music. That’s about all I can say.”
That is not exactly a plot synopsis, but fans seem to have taken it in stride. Short as it was, the playful tease quickly spread online. It also fits the way Cruise tends to approach these franchises, promising spectacle first and saving the details for later.
The music tease stands out, since sound has been a big part of the franchise’s identity. Cruise reportedly turned down about 30 songs before choosing OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried” for the beach scene in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. It was the second single from a soundtrack that also featured Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand”.
Behind the scenes, the picture is still taking shape. The script is being written by Ehren Kruger and Christopher McQuarrie, and word was that Bruckheimer acknowledged ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski would not return. Kosinski is booked with back-to-back projects, including a U.F.O. thriller for Apple and Universal’s ‘Miami Vice’ reboot. Paramount is reportedly searching for a new filmmaker to lead the project.

Casting is another open question. Actors Miles Teller and Glen Powell have been rumored to return alongside Cruise. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ also marked Val Kilmer’s final film role as Iceman. Plot details remain under wraps, and fans are eager to see whether familiar faces from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ will return.
Cruise’s schedule may also play a role. Before ‘Top Gun 3’ comes into focus, Cruise has other priorities. The comments are a reminder that the sequel is coming together slowly even though it is officially happening.
For now, the promise is jets, music and the return of Maverick. If the tease says anything, it says Cruise is not ready to give away more than he has to, and that is sure to keep the speculation going until Paramount reveals the next piece of the puzzle.
