Tom Cruise has built his career on knowing exactly how to work a red carpet, and his latest premiere appearance proved no exception. After months of anticipation surrounding one of the year’s most unlikely creative pairings, the actor finally got to celebrate the project in front of the public for the first time.

That milestone arrived this week in London, where ‘Digger‘ officially made its world premiere as a Royal Film Performance in Leicester Square, staged by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures in aid of the Film and TV Charity. Cruise made sure the moment carried his signature showmanship, striking a playful pose that mirrored his character directly on the poster looming behind him.

The image, captured against a massive backdrop featuring his transformed appearance as Digger Rockwell, highlighted just how dramatically Cruise altered his look for the role. Where the poster shows Cruise in character with thinning grey hair and a noticeably different silhouette, the actor appeared back to his familiar polished self in a classic black tuxedo for the premiere itself, playfully echoing his character’s stance for photographers.

‘Digger’ marks Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s first English-language film since his Oscar-winning ‘The Revenant,’ and finds Cruise taking on a character described in the film’s official logline as “the most powerful man in the world.” Digger Rockwell embarks on a frantic mission to prove himself humanity’s savior before the very disaster he unleashed destroys everything, in what’s been billed as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.”

That physical transformation, paired with a thick Southern accent, marks one of the more unexpected departures of Cruise’s career, especially coming from an actor known in recent years for his death-defying stunt work across the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise. The premiere photo capturing both versions of Cruise side by side offered fans their clearest look yet at just how far he pushed the role.

Cruise leads a stacked ensemble that includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy, all of whom joined him at the London premiere. Iñárritu directed and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolás Giacobone, and Sabina Berman, reuniting with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who shot the film on 35mm using VistaVision.

Filming took place over roughly six months in and around the UK’s Pinewood Studios, making the London premiere a fitting homecoming for a production so deeply rooted in British soil. That connection to the UK also factored into the choice to debut the film there first, rather than through the traditional fall festival circuit.

Following its London debut, ‘Digger’ is set to roll out internationally starting September 30, before arriving in North American theaters and IMAX screens on October 2. The film also marks Cruise’s first project since signing a deal to develop and produce theatrical films with Warner Bros. Discovery, adding extra weight to how audiences respond once the wider release begins.

Given how much buzz Cruise’s transformation has already generated from a single premiere photo, ‘Digger’ looks set to be one of the more talked-about releases of the fall.
