Tom Cruise’s Long-Awaited Sci-Fi Action Sequel to Fan Favorite Hit Could Finally Start Filming This Year

A long-discussed sci-fi project tied to Tom Cruise is once again gaining attention, with new signs suggesting it may finally be moving closer to production after years of delays and uncertainty.

According to industry updates and past reporting cited by outlets like Collider and Production Weekly, the sequel has quietly re-entered early planning discussions and could begin filming as soon as late 2026.

The project in question continues the story from the 2014 sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow, which was directed by Doug Liman and starred Tom Cruise alongside Emily Blunt. The film is based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and follows a soldier trapped in a time loop during a brutal alien invasion, forced to relive the same deadly battle again and again.

At the time of release, the film earned strong critical praise but had a mixed box office performance, making around $381 million worldwide on a reported $178 million budget. Despite that, it went on to build a strong fan base over the years, with many viewers calling it one of Cruise’s most inventive modern action films.

Talk of a sequel has been circulating for more than a decade. Early discussions date back to 2015, when writer Christopher McQuarrie said Cruise had already developed an idea for a follow-up. In later interviews, director Doug Liman also confirmed his involvement and described the concept as something that could “revolutionize how people make sequels.” At one point, the working title Live Die Repeat and Repeat was even mentioned, though it was never officially used.

Emily Blunt has also stayed attached in various updates over the years, but scheduling conflicts, budget concerns, and production delays repeatedly slowed progress. In earlier comments, she noted how difficult it has been to align the availability of all key people involved, especially given Cruise’s packed filming schedule across multiple projects.

More recently, attention around the sequel has grown again after listings suggested Warner Bros. is exploring ways to revive the project as part of a broader collaboration involving Cruise. This comes after the actor wrapped up his long-running Mission: Impossible franchise and shifted focus to other studio partnerships.

According to past remarks from Liman and McQuarrie, the sequel has remained in development in some form for years, even if it never fully moved into production. Liman once said the film would take a different structural approach, calling it “a sequel that’s a prequel,” hinting at a non-linear story style.

As of now, no official announcement has been made by Warner Bros., Tom Cruise, or Doug Liman confirming that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is fully greenlit. However, multiple recent reports suggest internal movement and renewed interest behind the scenes.

If it does move forward, it would mark one of Hollywood’s longest-running sequel developments finally reaching production, bringing Cruise back into one of his most unusual and well-loved sci-fi roles.
