Tom Hanks’ ‘Da Vinci Code’ Successor Finally Gets a Major Update From Netflix Creator
Fans of Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon stories are getting a new update about the upcoming Netflix adaptation of ‘The Secret of Secrets.’ The series is moving closer to production, and a major casting announcement for the next actor to play Robert Langdon could be coming soon.
Carlton Cuse, the co-creator and showrunner of the upcoming series, shared the update during an interview with ScreenRant’s Ben Gibbons at the 2026 Italian Global Series event. According to Cuse, the team is preparing to begin filming the eight-hour Netflix adaptation and is close to revealing who will take over the famous role.
“I’m getting ready to start filming an adaptation of Dan Brown’s new book, Secret of Secrets, which features the Robert Langdon character, who was played by Tom Hanks in three movies,” Cuse said. “I think we’re soon going to announce who’s going to be taking over as Robert Langdon in that franchise, and we’re making an eight-hour version of this latest Dan Brown Robert Langdon story for Netflix. We’re getting close [to confirming the lead].”
The upcoming series is based on Brown’s latest Robert Langdon novel, ‘The Secret of Secrets,’ which continues the adventures of the famous Harvard professor known for solving complex mysteries involving history, science, and secret organizations.
The character became widely known after Tom Hanks played Langdon in three movies directed by Ron Howard. The first film, ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ was released in 2006 and became a major box office success despite receiving negative reviews from critics. The movie earned more than $760 million worldwide and helped turn Brown’s novels into a global film franchise.
Hanks returned as Langdon for ‘Angels & Demons’ in 2009 and ‘Inferno’ in 2016. While both films performed well financially, they received mixed reactions from critics. ‘Inferno’ became the weakest performer of the three movies and marked Hanks’ final appearance as the character.
The franchise also received a television adaptation with Peacock’s ‘The Lost Symbol’ in 2021. That series explored a younger version of Robert Langdon and featured Ashley Zukerman in the lead role. Although the show was canceled after one season, it received better reviews than the movies and became the highest-rated adaptation in the franchise according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Netflix’s version of ‘The Secret of Secrets’ will bring the character back in a new format, with more time to explore the mystery at the center of the story. The series will reportedly run for eight episodes and is being developed by Carlton Cuse and Dan Brown, who are both serving as co-creators, writers, and executive producers alongside Emma Forman.
The story follows Robert Langdon as he tries to protect a manuscript created by scientist Katherine Solomon. The research contains groundbreaking ideas about the future of science, but it also puts her in danger from people who want to stop the information from being revealed.
Who should play Robert Langdon in Netflix's The Secret of Secrets?
Cuse, who is known for his work on shows like ‘Lost,’ will lead the project as showrunner. With filming expected to begin soon and the lead casting announcement approaching, Netflix’s ‘The Secret of Secrets’ is shaping up to be the next major chapter in the Robert Langdon franchise.
For now, fans are waiting to find out who will step into the role made famous by Tom Hanks and bring the iconic character back to screens.
