Tom Holland Admits He ‘Hated’ an Early Cut of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ and Fans Are Stunned

Test screenings have quietly shaped blockbuster movies for decades, often steering entire third acts, trimming subplots, or reshaping endings long before audiences ever see a finished cut. Marvel Studios has leaned on that process plenty of times, and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ turned out to be no exception.

Tom Holland has been candid throughout the film’s press run about how personally invested he was in shaping Peter Parker’s fourth solo outing, having spent time in the writers’ room helping develop the story from the ground up. That level of involvement made it all the more notable when he revealed the finished film wasn’t the only version that nearly made it to theaters.

Speaking in an interview with Quotable, Holland revealed that he and his co-stars watched several different cuts of the movie during post-production, including one built entirely around notes collected from test screening audiences. According to Holland, that particular version simply “totally didn’t work,” despite technically giving fans exactly what they’d asked for.

Holland explained that the disconnect came down to a gap between what test audiences wanted to see and what he and the rest of the creative team felt the story actually needed. He noted that the experience ended up teaching the filmmakers a valuable lesson about just how much a movie can shift during editing, for better or worse.

That kind of behind-the-scenes candor is relatively rare for a Marvel actor to share this close to release, especially with ‘Brand New Day’ currently riding a wave of strong buzz following its Rotten Tomatoes debut. The film has already been positioned as one of the stronger entries in Holland’s run as Spider-Man, making his admission about a rejected cut feel more like a curiosity than a warning sign.

It also isn’t the first time Holland has spoken openly about wanting creative input on the project. He previously discussed being welcomed into the writers’ room for the film, reportedly pitching an early concept built around Peter losing control of his body and powers under pressure, an idea that ultimately helped shape the version of the story that made it to screens.

Reports circulating ahead of the film’s release had also pointed to friction between Sony and Marvel Studios over which direction to take the sequel, with some accounts suggesting Sony wanted a multiverse-driven story in the vein of ‘No Way Home,’ while Marvel pushed for something more grounded. Holland’s comments about a rejected test-screening cut add another layer to that reported back-and-forth, even if he didn’t specify exactly what content was changed.

What’s clear is that whatever ended up on the cutting room floor didn’t stop ‘Brand New Day’ from becoming one of the most positively reviewed entries in the franchise. Between its critical reception and Holland’s own praised performance, the finished product suggests the creative team’s instincts ultimately won out over the test-screening version fans initially responded to.

For a franchise that’s had its share of behind-the-scenes drama over the years, Holland’s honesty here reads less like a red flag and more like a glimpse into just how unpredictable the editing process can be, even for a film this anticipated. It’s a reminder that the version audiences see in theaters is rarely the only version that almost existed.
