Tom Holland Finally Addresses Spider-Man’s Symbiote Suit in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’
Tom Holland has spent nearly a decade playing Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if his latest press tour is any indication, even he isn’t entirely sure what’s coming next for the character. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘ still dominating the box office, attention has already turned to how the wall-crawler might factor into Marvel’s next massive crossover event.
That speculation has only intensified given the film’s post-credits scene, which teased Spider-Man being pulled off-world just as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘ loom on the horizon. With Marvel confirming both films as the culmination of its current Multiverse Saga, fans have spent months theorizing about exactly what role Holland’s version of the hero might play once the story reaches Battleworld.
One particularly persistent fan theory involves Spider-Man finally donning the iconic black symbiote suit, a costume long associated with some of the character’s most dramatic comic book arcs. When pressed on that possibility during an appearance on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast, Holland gave a response that left the question entirely unanswered, throwing his hands up and refusing to make eye contact with host Josh Horowitz.
Holland insisted he has absolutely no idea what ‘Secret Wars’ is actually about, adding that he believes Marvel has deliberately kept him in the dark given how much of a promotional asset his ignorance becomes during press tours, according to Popverse. He went further, revealing that even a recent vacation with director Joe Russo produced zero details about the project, joking that he genuinely knows nothing about what’s coming.
That kind of tight-lipped approach isn’t new for Marvel, especially when it comes to Holland, who has developed something of a reputation over the years for accidentally spoiling plot details during press cycles. Given that history, keeping him entirely out of the loop on ‘Secret Wars’ specifics may be less about distrust and more about avoiding another accidental leak before the film’s eventual release.
Despite Holland’s insistence that he’s uninformed, rumors about his potential involvement in the crossover have continued to circulate throughout the year. Reports have suggested he could play a significant role in the film, though neither Holland nor directors Anthony and Joe Russo have offered any official confirmation about what that role might actually entail.
While Holland’s specific involvement remains unconfirmed, Marvel has already locked in a sprawling cast for ‘Secret Wars,’ including Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, and Benedict Cumberbatch reprising Doctor Strange. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn round out the Fantastic Four, joined by an ensemble that includes Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, and Sadie Sink, who is expected to appear following her recent addition to the Spider-Man franchise.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving this December ahead of ‘Secret Wars’ the following year, fans will have to wait a while longer before finding out whether Holland’s Spider-Man gets his symbiote moment or continues web-slinging in his classic red and blue.
Will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man finally wear the black symbiote suit in Avengers: Secret Wars?
