Marvel fans have spent years speculating about when Tom Holland’s Spider-Man might finally slip into the iconic black symbiote suit, a storyline teased ever since a stray piece of Venom got left behind in the MCU during ‘No Way Home.’ With Holland now approaching a full decade in the role, the question has only grown louder with each new press cycle.

That speculation reached a new level this week as Holland sat down for an extended, career-spanning conversation reflecting on nearly ten years as Peter Parker. Alongside stories about his earliest auditions and his emotional death scene in ‘Infinity War,’ the conversation inevitably turned toward what fans want to see next, including that long-teased black suit.

Rather than dodging the topic entirely, Holland offered a surprisingly candid explanation for why bringing the symbiote suit to life on screen isn’t as simple as fans might assume. Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused, Holland admitted he isn’t sure how the MCU would actually adapt the look, pointing specifically to how well the design has already been executed elsewhere.

“They did it so well in the game and I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar without having a CG component,” Holland explained, referencing the acclaimed rendition of the symbiote suit seen in recent Spider-Man video games. His comment highlights a genuine creative hurdle: translating a design built around fluid, organic movement into something that can be practically worn and filmed on a live-action set.

That challenge isn’t just theoretical for Holland. Live-action Spider-Man has only depicted the symbiote suit once before, in 2007’s ‘Spider-Man 3,’ and recreating that same alien, shifting texture convincingly on screen has become significantly more complex as fan expectations have risen alongside video game and animated depictions of the character.

Holland’s comments arrive alongside continued teasing from Marvel’s producers about the symbiote’s future in the franchise. During the same press cycle, Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal both fielded questions about a potential Venom crossover on the same podcast, with Feige offering an optimistic but noncommittal “Always have hope,” while Pascal echoed that sentiment, saying she and the studio both remain hopeful as well.

That combination of interest from the studio’s top decision-makers and genuine creative uncertainty from its leading man paints a complicated picture of where this storyline actually stands. It suggests the desire to eventually bring the symbiote into live action is real, but the execution remains an unresolved puzzle even among the people closest to the project.

Holland has been fielding versions of this question throughout the entire ‘Brand New Day’ press tour, previously telling a young fan during a Cinépolis event in Mexico that he couldn’t confirm whether the suit would appear in the new film, though he remained confident audiences would see it eventually. His latest comments add a layer of technical honesty to that ongoing tease, suggesting the delay may have as much to do with craft as it does with storytelling timing.

With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ now swinging into theaters and Avengers: Secret Wars still on the horizon, fans have plenty of future opportunities to finally see Holland’s Peter Parker wrapped in black. Whether Marvel manages to crack the CG-versus-practical puzzle Holland described remains to be seen, but it’s clear the studio isn’t ruling it out.

How should Marvel bring Spider-Man’s symbiote suit to life?
