Tom Holland Teases Whether an R-Rated Punisher Will Appear in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland has addressed fan concerns about how Jon Bernthal’s Punisher will fit into Spider-Man: Brand New Day, especially given the character’s violent and R-rated history. The comments come from an interview with Empire magazine, as the film moves further into production under director Destin Daniel Cretton.
The Punisher, also known as Frank Castle, is a character defined by extreme violence and a no-compromise approach to justice. Bernthal first played the role in Netflix’s Marvel series, later returning in Daredevil: Born Again and more recently in the MCU Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill. In those appearances, the character has been shown operating in a very dark, brutal world, far removed from the tone of typical Spider-Man stories.
With Brand New Day bringing Frank Castle into Peter Parker’s universe, fans have questioned how Marvel will balance the character’s intensity with a lighter, more mainstream superhero film. Holland addressed those concerns directly, saying the creative team has worked to preserve the essence of the character while adapting him to the film’s tone.
“I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies, but the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know,” Holland said in the interview. His comments suggest that the film will not dilute the character, even if the presentation is adjusted for a broader audience.
He also hinted that the filmmakers have found ways to handle the Punisher’s more graphic traits without breaking the tone of a Spider-Man film. “There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people,” Holland added. The statement points to creative storytelling choices rather than a full softening of the character.
Jon Bernthal also spoke about Frank Castle’s mindset in the upcoming film. According to Bernthal, the character is not designed to fit into a traditional superhero partnership. “Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” he said. “He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.”
Despite that, Bernthal suggested there may still be a complex dynamic between Castle and Peter Parker. “I think, begrudgingly, Frank would tell you, if he had to be honest, he does care about Peter,” he added. This sets up a potential uneasy alliance between the two characters, rather than a traditional partnership.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to explore how Peter Parker interacts with more extreme figures in the MCU. Based on the cast and early comments from those involved, the film appears to be balancing different tones and character styles while keeping the core identity of Spider-Man intact.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 31, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
