‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Actor James Handy Murder Case: Suspect Allegedly Caught on Shocking Video Footage
Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy has died after a fatal stabbing incident in Los Angeles, with police later arresting a suspect who was allegedly captured on surveillance video leaving the scene.
Authorities say the suspect is 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend. He has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being held on a $2 million bond, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Video obtained by FOX 11 Los Angeles reportedly shows a man believed to be Gledhill walking along a sidewalk near a residential area shortly after the incident. In the footage, he appears to move away from the home before later returning, which investigators say is tied to the timeline of the attack.
Police reported that Handy, 81, was found unconscious outside his home in Tarzana, California, with a stab wound to the chest. He was later transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Shortly after the incident, dispatchers received a 911 call from a man who identified himself in disturbing terms. According to police records cited in the reports, the caller said, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Investigators later identified that caller as Gledhill.
The LAPD stated that Gledhill remained near the scene and ultimately flagged down responding officers, telling them he was the person they were looking for. Officers arrested him at the location without further incident.
Officials have described the case as an isolated event and said there is no ongoing threat to the public. At this stage, investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive behind the killing.
James Handy was a veteran character actor whose career spanned decades in film and television. He appeared in a wide range of productions, often in supporting roles, including Law & Order, CSI: NY, The X Files, NCIS, Alias, and The West Wing.
One of his most recent film appearances was in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where he played a bartender named Jimmy working alongside Jennifer Connelly’s character, who is connected to Tom Cruise’s role in the film. He also appeared in films such as Jumanji, Arachnophobia, and Logan.
Following news of his death, colleagues and entertainment writers paid tribute to Handy’s long career. Writer Jay Bobbin described him as a “superb character actor”, while producer Don Winslow, who worked with him on the series UC: Undercover, called him a “terrific actor” and praised his performances.
Police say Gledhill was taken into custody and booked into Van Nuys Jail on one count of murder. Investigators are continuing to review evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, as they piece together the events leading up to the killing.
Handy’s death has shocked colleagues and fans who remembered him as a steady presence in Hollywood productions for more than half a century.
