‘Toy Story 5’ Directors Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris Reveal the Reason Woody Has a Bald Spot

Directors Andrew Stanton and co-director Kenna Harris spoke about the creative choice while discussing how Woody has changed since the last Toy Story film. The new movie continues the story after Woody leaves Bonnie’s room and starts a new life with Bo Peep, helping lost toys find new owners.

Fans noticed in early footage that Woody looks different. He has visible aging signs for a toy character, including a bald spot and a slightly worn-out body. This led to questions about why the design changed, since earlier films kept the toys mostly the same.

Stanton explained that the idea started as a simple creative joke inside the story team. He said, “It started out as a gag from our story department trying to find out what’s the thing to hang on for Woody because something’s evolved for him even if it’s small.”

The idea grew from there. Instead of keeping Woody exactly the same, the team wanted to show that time and experience still matter, even for toys. The story group experimented with small changes that would reflect his long journey outside Bonnie’s room.

Kenna Harris added more detail about how the decision developed. She said, “It was like a silly wish list for the story team that was just going off, and the story team is largely made up of, like, young folks who have grown up with the same movies.” She explained that the team wanted to show visual signs of Woody’s time on the road, including sun fading and wear.

Harris also explained the meaning behind the final design choices. She said, “We really wanted to show that he’s been on the road.” The idea was not to change who Woody is, but to reflect that he has lived a different kind of life since leaving his original home.

According to the filmmakers, these changes are meant to show growth and movement in the story world. Woody is not just staying in one place anymore. He is traveling, helping other toys, and living a different kind of life with Bo Peep. The visual changes are meant to support that story direction.

The film itself continues the main storyline of the franchise. After Woody’s departure in the previous film, Jessie has taken leadership in Bonnie’s room, with Buzz Lightyear acting as her second-in-command. However, Bonnie has now become focused on a new toy, a tablet-like character named Lilypad, which creates a new problem for the group.

This leads to Woody returning to help his old friends once again. The story brings together familiar characters while showing how they have all changed since the earlier films. The new design details, including Woody’s worn appearance, are part of that updated direction.

In the end, Woody’s bald spot is not treated as a joke alone, but as a sign of where he has been and how far he has traveled since leaving home.
