James Van Der Beek passed away on February 11 at the age of 48, after a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer. His death has left the entertainment world deeply saddened, as friends, co-stars, and fans remember him not just as a teen icon but as a kind and inspiring person.

Sarah Michelle Gellar spoke about her sadness for his family, saying it was a huge loss to the entire world. Chad Michael Murray, who starred with him on One Tree Hill, called him a giant who inspired others to strive for personal growth.

Murray added that James was an absolute inspiration, a sentiment echoed by Dancing with the Stars professional Emma Slater, who said she was grateful to have had the chance to say her final goodbyes.

Krysten Ritter described him as pure magic, and show creator Nahnatchka Khan praised his sense of humor and generous spirit, saying his presence made everyone around him better. Noah Beck, who played his son in the Sidelined films, remembered him as the best mentor a newcomer could ask for.

The outpouring of grief also brought attention to his family. Busy Philipps, a close friend since their Capeside days, asked fans to support a GoFundMe for his widow, Kimberly, and their six children.

She said James was one in a billion and that his absence would be felt across the community for years. The campaign helps cover the financial strain from his long illness, which reportedly left the family in need.

Even while battling cancer, James continued working. His last role was in the Prime Video series Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel executive-produced by Reese Witherspoon. In the show, he plays Dean Wilson, a mayoral candidate and school superintendent, acting alongside Lexi Minetree, June Diane Raphael, and Tom Everett Scott. Elle is set to premiere on July 1.

James Van Der Beek’s courage in continuing to work and advocate for cancer awareness while facing his own stage 3 diagnosis is being remembered by many as one of his most lasting legacies.
