Trump Unveils ‘Real Life Hunger Games’ Plan for America’s 250th Birthday
President Donald Trump has announced a new national event called the Patriot Games as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration planned for next year.
The announcement came on Thursday through a video released by Freedom 250, a group formed to help organize the anniversary events, according to information shared by the White House.
The Patriot Games will be held at the White House and are expected to last four days in the fall. Trump said the event will feature top high school athletes from across the country. Each U.S. state and territory will send one male and one female student to compete.
“In the fall, we will host the first ever Patriot Games, an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes — one young man and one young woman from each state and territory,” Trump said.

Freedom 250 describes itself as a non-partisan organization working with the administration on the 250th birthday celebrations. Trump had mentioned the idea earlier this year and said the games would be televised. He also said Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy would be involved in running the event.
The announcement quickly drew attention online. Many Democrats and social media users mocked the idea, saying it reminded them of The Hunger Games, a popular book and movie series where children compete in deadly public contests. While the Patriot Games are described as a sports competition, the comparison spread fast across social platforms.
Users shared jokes and criticism, with posts like “Bro just reinvented the hunger games,” “We got real life Hunger Games,” and “GETTING IRL HUNGER GAMES BEFORE GTA 6.” Others added comments such as “And the odds are in favor of whoever is the prediction market’s favorite” and “I swear this country is district 1.”
The Patriot Games are only one part of Trump’s larger vision for the 250th anniversary. In the same video, he spoke about plans to build a large arch monument in Washington, D.C.
“We are the only major place without a triumphal arc. A beautiful triumphal arc, one like in Paris, where they have the great, a beautiful arc. They call it the Arc de Triomphe, and we’re going to have one in Washington, DC, very soon,” Trump said.
Trump also confirmed plans for a UFC event on the White House South Lawn. The fight is scheduled for June 14, which is both Flag Day and Trump’s birthday.
“On Flag Day, we will have a one-of-a-kind UFC event here at the White House. It’ll be the greatest champion fighters in the world, all fighting that same night. The great Dana White is hosting, and it’s going to be something special,” he said.
Over the past year, the administration has pushed federal agencies to support Trump’s ideas for the anniversary. The Department of Agriculture has taken on the Great American State Fair concept, which asks states to compete for the title of the most patriotic fair.
At the same time, the White House has ordered a broad review of the Smithsonian Institution, calling for exhibits tied to the 250th anniversary to focus more on national pride.
