Released by Dimension Films after production by Woods Entertainment, the film’s suspense, self-aware structure, and Marco Beltrami’s score helped it become a box-office hit and restart the slasher wave in the late 1990s.

The film showcases Emmerich’s trademark large-scale effects work, pairing character-driven threads with globe-trotting set pieces. Released by Columbia Pictures, it became one of the late-2000s’ defining disaster movies and a major international box-office performer.
