The penultimate episode of Outlander brought major and unexpected deaths as the series moves toward its final episode. The episode aired on May 8 on Starz, according to the network, and it focused heavily on betrayal, secrets, and revenge.

In this episode, two characters were killed off: Percy Beauchamp, played by Michael Lindall, and Captain Richardson, played by Ben Lambert. Both actors joined the series in season 7, and their storylines ended just before the show’s conclusion.

The episode begins with Lord John Grey, played by David Berry, waking up after being kidnapped by Richardson. Richardson tries to use John’s personal secrets against him, especially involving his romantic relationships, including one with his stepbrother Percy.

Richardson forces John into a political demand, asking him to convince his brother not to give a speech about war funding. Richardson believes the speech could affect the outcome of the war, but John refuses to cooperate.

Percy later tries to convince John again. During this emotional moment, he confesses his feelings, saying he loves him. He also asks John to pass a message and a ring to his son William.

This leads to a rescue attempt involving William, Jamie Fraser, and Claire Fraser, who eventually help free Lord John Grey.

Claire also learns something surprising during the confrontation with Richardson. It is revealed that Richardson is a time traveler. He explains that his goal is to change history so the British win the American Revolutionary War, which he believes would prevent slavery from lasting as long due to his experience of the Civil War.

After hearing his reasoning, Claire agrees to let him go. However, Lord John Grey shoots and kills Richardson immediately afterward.

Later in the episode, Percy’s story comes to an end in a different way. After everything is over, John visits Percy and asks him to sign a confession connected to the kidnapping and the accusations about John’s personal life. Percy agrees and signs the document.

After John leaves, Percy takes his own life.

These events come shortly after another major character death earlier in the season. Fergus was killed off in a change from the original book series by Diana Gabaldon. In the books, a different character dies in that event, but the show chose to kill Fergus instead.

Gabaldon commented on the change in an interview with Parade. She said, “I suppose they thought they had to kill somebody. Personally, I thought if they were too chicken to do it right, they should just have eased back and burned down the print shop.”

The final episode of Outlander is scheduled to air on May 15 on Starz, bringing the long-running series to a close.
