Users Face Higher Costs as This Streaming Service Raises Prices
Amazon is preparing to change the way some people watch shows on Prime Video. According to the company, viewers in the United States who want to watch without ads will soon have to pay for a new premium option.
Starting April 10, the current ad-free add-on will be replaced by a new plan called Prime Video Ultra. The new tier will cost $4.99 per month. This change comes about two years after Amazon first added advertising to the standard Prime Video experience.
Amazon says the higher price comes with extra features. People who subscribe to the Ultra tier will be able to watch movies and shows in 4K and UHD quality. The plan also includes Dolby Atmos audio and allows up to five streams at the same time. Another upgrade is the offline download limit, which will increase from 25 titles to 100 for users on the new plan.
The company explained the price change in a statement. “Delivering ad-free streaming with premium features requires significant investment, and this structure aligns with other major streaming services while ensuring customers have the flexibility to choose how they want to watch,” Amazon says.
The new option is meant to offer more advanced viewing features while still letting customers choose the plan that fits their needs. There will also be an annual version of the Ultra plan available for $45.99.
Regular Prime members will still get access to the basic streaming library as part of their membership. The standard Amazon Prime plan remains priced at $14.99 per month or $139 per year.
However, viewers who stay with the regular plan will have a few limits compared to the Ultra tier. They will be able to watch content in HD and HDR quality and will be limited to four streams at once. The number of downloads they can store offline will also be capped at 50 titles.
Even for customers who upgrade, some programs will still include ads. Amazon noted that certain live events and sports broadcasts will continue to show commercials regardless of the plan.
Prime Video has recently become home to several very popular shows. One of the biggest hits is Fallout, which has already been renewed for a third season. Another successful series on the platform is Reacher, which continues to attract a large audience.
The service also offers newer titles that are gaining attention. These include Scarpetta starring Nicole Kidman and Jamie Lee Curtis, along with the mystery series Young Sherlock.
More content is expected to arrive later this year. Fans are especially waiting for the final season of The Boys. Another upcoming project is Elle, which is being executive-produced by Reese Witherspoon.
With these price changes and a steady stream of new shows, Prime Video continues to compete with other streaming services as companies look for new ways to balance costs and entertainment options for viewers.
