Uwe Boll has responded to reports claiming that Armie Hammer was unhappy after watching their new movie, Citizen Vigilante. The director pushed back against the rumors, saying he enjoyed working with Hammer and had no issues with the actor during production.

In an email sent to TheWrap, Boll praised Hammer’s work on the film and said the actor was fully committed from the beginning.

“Armie was perfect for the part and I loved working with him. He was prepared and delivered every day on set. We both had a great time working together even if the subject matter of the film is very serious and real,” Boll said.

The director also defended the movie itself, arguing that it was always meant to divide audiences. He said he pays more attention to viewers than professional critics and believes the film has connected with its target audience.

“It was clear that the film will split the audience but I never cared about reviewers – I care about the audience. 94% on Rotten Tomatoes or 4.5 on Amazon shows that the audience loves the film. 50% of the audience doesn’t feel connected anymore with the crap the studios are spitting out – they needed and wanted a blunt and hard film about reality,” Boll added.

Boll’s comments came after a report from Puck’s Kim Masters claimed Hammer was shocked when he finally watched the completed version of Citizen Vigilante. According to an unnamed source close to Hammer, the actor had a very negative reaction to the finished film.

“The first time he saw it, he was in tears. And not tears of joy. He called me and said, ‘F–k. This is hateful, disgusting,’” the source told Puck.

The same source also claimed that Hammer felt the final movie was very different from what he believed they had made during filming.

“It’s not like he sent him a hundred-page script. When he saw the final product, he was, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made,’” the source said.

Citizen Vigilante follows Hammer as a man who targets immigrants and foreigners, making it one of Boll’s most controversial films. The movie had a short theatrical release before becoming available through video-on-demand platforms.

The production has attracted attention not only because of its story but also because it marks one of Hammer’s first major acting roles since his career came to a halt in 2021. That year, multiple women accused the actor of sexual and emotional abuse. Although investigations by the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office did not result in criminal charges, Hammer lost representation and saw many projects disappear.

Earlier this year, Hammer openly admitted that he was eager to return to acting, regardless of the type of project. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter before Citizen Vigilante was released, he said, “I would have done a cat food commercial.”

Do you believe Armie Hammer’s reported reaction to Citizen Vigilante?

Before the controversy surrounding his personal life, Hammer was considered one of Hollywood’s rising stars. He appeared in films including The Social Network, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Lone Ranger before his career was put on hold.

For now, neither Hammer nor his representatives have publicly responded to Boll’s latest comments. As a result, the reports from Puck and Boll’s own statements continue to present very different versions of what happened after the actor finally watched Citizen Vigilante.
