Vanessa Hudgens has spoken openly about why she decided to step away from filming intimate scenes after a difficult experience early in her career. The actress, now 37, said the change in her approach came after working on the 2012 film Spring Breakers.

The film, reported by multiple entertainment outlets, followed the story of four young women who get involved in crime to fund a wild holiday. Hudgens starred alongside Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. One of the most talked-about moments in the movie involved a highly sensitive scene with her character and two other characters played by James Franco and Ashley Benson.

Hudgens later said that the experience of filming those scenes stayed with her. She explained that the discomfort was not only about what was being filmed but also about the pressure of the situation and the emotions on set. She shared in an interview a year after the film’s release that she and her co-stars were very anxious going into it.

She said, “We thought: ‘Okay, it will be fine, right?’ But we worked ourselves up so much and made ourselves so nervous that when we got to set we were even more anxious. It was just awful.”

At the time of the film’s release, Hudgens also told Glow magazine that the experience was extremely stressful for her and changed how she viewed those kinds of scenes going forward. She made it clear to her agent that she did not want to continue doing similar work in the future.

Hudgens explained that she had taken on more mature roles at that stage of her career because she wanted to move away from her earlier Disney image. She was known worldwide for her work in family-friendly projects, and Spring Breakers marked a big shift in the type of characters she was playing.

Even though the experience was difficult, she has said she does not regret the film itself. She described it as a unique project that stood out from others at the time and reflected a certain moment in youth culture. She also said she is proud of the final result despite her personal discomfort during filming.

She said, “I am really proud of that film. I think it is something special, different, and very bold. It shows a part of youth culture in an interesting way.”

Hudgens also spoke about how hard it was to transition into more serious roles in Hollywood, explaining that she had to work for the opportunities she wanted and often faced challenges along the way.

Her Spring Breakers co-star Selena Gomez later reflected on the same period in a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Gomez admitted that she and Hudgens were very young at the time and did not fully understand the impact the film would have.

She said, “I thought I was very grown up and mature. Looking back, I probably sounded like I was twelve. I really believed my younger fans would not see it because of the rating. Vanessa would just listen, and I realize now how naive I was.”

It is understandable that Hudgens changed her boundaries after such an intense experience. Actors often learn what they are comfortable with only after going through real situations on set. What do you think about her decision? Share your thoughts in the comments.
