Rated R? Not a Chance…The Venom Movie Rating Will Be…

Venom Movie Rating PG-13

The movie rating for the upcoming Venom movie was announced. Contrary to popular belief, it will not be Rated R. Instead, for the benefit of fans under 18, the Venom movie rating is PG-13.

This comes as no surprise when you think about it. Sony, for as hard as they have tried, has not been able to get any sort of footing on their Spider-verse. With both versions of The Amazing Spider-Man winding up as critical and commercial failures, the studio can’t risk alienating a large segment of the audience.

And I couldn’t be happier

With the success of Deadpool and Logan, studios have lined up to make the next violent and profanity-filled comic book adaptation. While it hasn’t curbed the quality of the films…as of yet, there are many, including myself who fear it may.

There’s a very old saying that states that one can’t have too much of a good thing. When it comes to Rated R superheroes, I disagree.

Venom was created by Todd McFarlane and is one of Marvel’s most popular characters. For Sony to have made his movie Rated R would have been a giant disservice to the segment of the population who like him most. I mean, children all over the world would be crushed to find out that they couldn’t go see Venom unless they a) snuck into the theater or b) watched it on iTunes after their parents went to bed.

Worse yet, doing so could cause an already shaky “Spider-Verse” foundation to crumble before it even begins. Venom needs to succeed if we have any hope of seeing Black Cat, Silver Sable, Morbius or any of the other villains in Spider-Man’s universe.

And for that matter…

It is widely speculated that at some point both Tom Hardy’s Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will meet on screen. While this is every fans dream, there is zero chance that this happens if the Venom movie rating is R.

Sony did the right thing by going PG-13. Now hopefully the movie will live up to its hype.

Cheers,

Joel
