‘VisionQuest’ D23 Display Fuels Speculation That Marvel’s Original Human Torch Is Finally Coming to the MCU

Marvel Studios has spent years teasing the WandaVision universe’s next chapter, and the wait for concrete details is almost over. ‘VisionQuest,‘ the third installment in the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued through ‘Agatha All Along,’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, following Paul Bettany’s White Vision as he continues his search for identity and purpose after the events of ‘WandaVision.’

That search has already promised to get considerably more crowded inside Vision’s own mind. Bettany has previously described the show as an opportunity to explore just how cluttered Vision’s internal world actually is, revealing that the character has been saving, copying, and pasting various AI personalities to keep them alive inside his head, including one kept behind a particularly strong firewall because, in Bettany’s words, that AI is a psychopath, almost certainly referring to Ultron.

Now, at Disney’s D23 Expo, Marvel has given fans their most detailed look yet at the series, and one particular piece of concept art is generating serious speculation. Alongside a display showcasing White Vision’s upgraded suit, exhibition floor photos reveal artwork depicting a mysterious figure fully engulfed in flames, standing at the center of what appears to be a burning room or town.

That imagery has fans and outlets alike speculating that the fiery figure could represent Jim Hammond, Marvel’s original android Human Torch, finally making his MCU debut. Created by Professor Phineas T. Horton in the comics and first appearing in 1939’s Marvel Comics #1, Hammond served as a member of the Invaders during World War II, and close examination of the concept art’s chest and shoulder details reportedly resembles the costume Hammond wore in his later comic appearances.

The theory gains further traction given how central android and AI characters already are to ‘VisionQuest’s’ premise. The series also introduces Emily Hampshire as a human version of E.D.I.T.H., the technology originally created by Tony Stark before being passed to Peter Parker following Iron Man’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ reinforcing the show’s focus on synthetic and artificial intelligence characters woven throughout its story.

Created by Terry Matalas, ‘VisionQuest’ stars Bettany alongside James Spader reprising Ultron, Todd Stashwick as Paladin, and Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff. White Vision’s suit on display at D23 largely mirrors the character’s original ‘WandaVision’ look, with subtle white-gold accents added to the chestpiece to match highlights across the belt, boots, and gauntlets, suggesting the character retains his post-WandaVision appearance for at least part of the new series.

None of Marvel Studios’ materials have officially confirmed the fiery figure’s identity, leaving the Human Torch theory firmly in speculation territory for now. Still, given how directly the character’s design in the concept art appears to echo Hammond’s comic book look, fans are treating the tease as one of the weekend’s most intriguing D23 reveals.

If confirmed, Jim Hammond’s introduction would mark a significant expansion of Marvel’s mythology, tying the MCU back to some of the earliest characters in Marvel Comics history nearly nine decades after his original debut. Given ‘VisionQuest’s’ focus on AI, memory, and synthetic identity, a character built around similarly complex origins would fit naturally within the show’s broader thematic framework.

With the series premiering in just two months and Marvel likely to reveal more details throughout the rest of D23 weekend, fans won’t have to wait long to find out whether this fiery tease really does represent the original Human Torch’s long-awaited MCU arrival.
