Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic adaptation of the beloved video game franchise has spent the last two years proving it belongs in the same conversation as the biggest genre shows on television. Between its critical acclaim and massive viewership numbers, ‘Fallout’ has quickly become one of the streamer’s crown jewels, and the wait for more has been agonizing for fans who devoured the second season the moment it dropped.

That wait just got a little shorter. Production on the show’s next chapter has officially kicked into gear, and star Walton Goggins wasted no time letting fans know exactly where things stand. The actor took to Instagram with a new behind-the-scenes look that instantly sent fans into a frenzy of speculation and excitement.

Goggins shared a series of images showing his transformation back into the Ghoul, along with a caption reading, “Back in the saddle, Fallout Season 3,” confirming that cameras are officially rolling on the show’s third installment. The post marks the first tangible confirmation that production has moved from the planning stages into actual filming, something fans have been anticipating since the season was greenlit well over a year ago.

Prime Video actually confirmed ‘Fallout’ Season 3 back in May 2025, a full seven months before Season 2 even premiered, a testament to just how confident the studio is in the franchise’s staying power. Season 2 went on to become one of the platform’s most-watched shows ever, following Lucy and the Ghoul deeper into the wasteland as their journey collided with the chaos of New Vegas. That success made the early renewal look like an easy call in hindsight.

The upcoming season picks up from a genuinely gutting cliffhanger. After spending the entirety of Season 2 searching for his wife Barb and daughter Janey, the Ghoul finally locates their cryo chambers only to find them empty, with nothing left behind but a postcard hinting that the family made their way to Colorado. It is a devastating gut punch dressed up as a glimmer of hope, and it sets the stage for the Ghoul’s storyline to head somewhere entirely new for the franchise.

Talking about what comes next for his character, Goggins made clear that Season 3 represents new emotional territory rather than a wrap up. “I know that we are still at the tip of the iceberg phase of this experience. I don’t know how long the story can go, but I know that we have a lot of territory to cover,” he told Extra. He added that there are still layers of Cooper Howard’s pre-apocalypse life he is eager to dig into once the show gets back into production.

That journey will reportedly send the Ghoul off on his own path toward Colorado, separate from Lucy and Maximus, who are expected to remain entangled in the unfolding power struggle in and around New Vegas. Showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet has confirmed that the Ghoul’s road to Colorado will not be a straight shot, teasing plenty of obstacles along the way in a wasteland that rarely makes anything easy.

Joining the returning trio of Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, and Goggins are several notable new additions to the cast. Aaron Paul, Manny Jacinto, Emily Mortimer, and Thomasin McKenzie have all been confirmed to join the show in yet-to-be-revealed roles, adding even more star power to an already stacked ensemble. Fans are understandably buzzing over the potential ways these new faces could shake up the show’s ever-expanding world.

With filming officially underway, attention will now turn to how long production takes and when a release date might finally be locked in. Given that Season 2 took roughly thirteen months from the start of filming to its eventual premiere, a similar timeline would put Season 3 on track for a late 2027 release, though nothing has been officially confirmed just yet.
