Warner Bros. Releases ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ Trailer at CinemaCon: “We Cast Gaga Because She’s Magic”

Like it was expected the first trailer for ‘Joker: Folie a Deux’ was released on this year’s CinemaCon during Warner. Bros. presentation. The trailer features Arthur and Harley falling in love, both with worsening mental health conditions. They want to escape together and they engage in various musical performances along the way, so it’s pretty clear, and this is undeniable proof that the movie will indeed be a musical. You can check out the trailer below:

Todd Phillips explained that, even though prior reports were saying that ‘Joker’ was supposed to be a standalone movie, there were always talks to make a sequel:

Joaquin and I, while we were shooting the movie, always talked about making a sequel. We were never really serious and we also didn’t want to jinx the movie. When the movie became such a big success and Joaquin and I were talking through the pandemic…we just decide to revisit it and we had a blast doing it.

Phillips also explained why Gaga was cast in the starring role alongside Phoenix:

Gaga, we cast Gaga because she’s magic, right? I was a producer on A Star Is Born…that was the first time I’d really met her and got to watch her work and I was like Wow, she has magic in her.’

And now onto the most sensitive question of all, the fact that ‘Joker 2’ is a musical. This is a highly polarizing topic in the fandom, with half of the fans praising the movie for daring to go in that direction and half of the fandom threatening to boycott the movie.

We’ve never really talked about it like that but it’s a movie where music is an essential element and, to me, it doesn’t veer to far from the first film. Yeah, Arthur is weird and aloof…but he has music in him…it informed a lot of the dancing in the first film…It didn’t seem like tjhat big of a step, what we did here. It’s different but it’ll make sense.

‘Folie à Deux’ is described as a drama set in and around Arkham Asylum, but specific plot details haven’t been confirmed officially. The cast includes Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, and Brendan Gleeson. The screenplay was co-written by Todd Phillips and Scott Silver. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set for release in the United States on October 4, 2024, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
