Michael has become one of the biggest movie success stories of 2026, and according to fans, the reason behind its massive popularity comes down to more than just one factor.

The Antoine Fuqua-directed biographical film about Michael Jackson’s life has earned more than $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biographical movie ever released. While critics had mixed reactions to the film, audiences around the world continued showing up in huge numbers, proving the lasting power of Jackson’s legacy.

To find out what fans believe made Michael such a major box office hit, we asked our audience through a poll. Based on 270 votes, the majority of voters said the movie’s success came from a combination of different elements rather than one single reason.

The biggest response came from fans who selected “A combination of all these factors,” with 57% of the votes. This suggests many viewers believe the film benefited from several things working together, including Jackson’s music, the performances, the marketing, and the emotional connection audiences have with one of the most famous entertainers in history.

The second most popular answer focused on Michael Jackson’s legendary music and worldwide fanbase. That option received 31% of the votes, showing that many fans believe the singer’s enormous global following was the biggest reason people wanted to experience the film in theaters.

Jackson remains one of the most influential musicians of all time, with decades of hit songs, iconic performances, and a fanbase that stretches across generations. For many viewers, seeing his story brought to the big screen was an event rather than just another movie release.

Another 7% of voters chose nostalgia for one of the biggest icons in music history as the main reason behind the film’s success. This highlights how strongly audiences still connect with Jackson’s career and cultural impact, even years after his passing.

The performances and storytelling received 3% of the votes, while strong marketing and worldwide interest received 1%. Although those numbers were smaller, they still show that some viewers believe the cast, promotion, and overall presentation played a role in bringing audiences into theaters.

The film’s commercial performance has been historic. Michael opened with $97.2 million domestically, becoming the biggest opening ever for a musical biographical film. It later passed Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing musical biopic and surpassed Oppenheimer to become the biggest biographical film worldwide.

A major part of the attention surrounding the movie has also been the performance of Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew, who plays the legendary singer in his first major film role. Audiences and critics have both highlighted his portrayal as one of the strongest parts of the movie.

Despite criticism from some reviewers who felt the story was too carefully presented, the box office results show that fans were interested in experiencing Jackson’s journey on the big screen. The movie’s success also demonstrates the continued power of music-based stories when they connect with audiences emotionally.
