Marvel Universe is home to incredibly powerful beings, and most of them have a certain role in the cosmic hierarchy that maintains the balance in the Universe as best as it can. So far, we’ve discussed gods, Celestials, Demons, and Alien species, but one incredibly powerful entity remained a mystery; we’re talking about Demiurge. Demiurge wasn’t featured in a lot of stories. Still, due to its connection to the Elder Gods, we can only assume what its powers are, and due to that, we’ve decided to explore in a bit more detail what exactly Demiurge is and how powerful it is.

Demiurge is a primordial sentient life force that serves as the embodiment of Earth’s biosphere that gave birth to the powerful, but ultimately evil, Elder Gods. Demiurge has the powers of molecular manipulation and life creation as pieces of its own essence were used in creating Elder Gods. Apparently, Demiurge’s power can be inherited as William Kaplan (Wiccan) was destined to transform into Demiurge.

Now that we’ve covered briefly what we know about the Demiurge, it’s time to explore it in more detail. If you’re interested in more, stay with us and keep reading!

Demiurge was responsible for creating Elder Gods

Now the story of how Demiruge and all life forms connected to it was told in ‘Thor Annual’ #10, released in 1982. And even though a lot has changed lore-wise over the years, some things are still factually correct.

The story of Demiurge is basically the story of Elder Gods who would become known as demons. Before there were conventional life forms on Earth, before there was even Earth, existed void. Void gave rise to matter, and matter, in turn, gave rise to stars. Stars eventually formed their own planets, and one such planet was Earth, which was regarded as special due to its diverse and potent biosphere that held great potential for life.

Demiurge creation

All of Earth’s energy eventually becomes self-aware, forming the so-called ‘Demiurge.’ Demiurge was the sentient life force of Earth’s Biosphere, or to make it clearer, Demiurge was what happens when the power and potential for creation become self-aware.

Demiurge eventually aligned Earth with Celestial Axis, and in a sudden but potent burst of energy, Demiurge’s sparkes teeming with potential for life showered the surface of the Earth, creating the primeval mud and spawning the so-called Elder Gods, the first forms of life on Earth.

Creation of Elder Gods

Demiurge spawned many Elder Gods, and one of them was Cthon, a demon well known to be connected to Chaos Magic. But how did Cthon exactly become evil? Well, this is the second part of the story.

Elder Gods were eventually corrupted, and they needed to be destroyed

Elder Gods proliferated across the surface of the Earth. But this, in turn, created many problems for the balance of life in general. The more Elder Gods existed, the more they battled for power and supremacy until they knew nothing but war and degenerated into evil and corrupted beings.

Elder Gods Corrupted

Gaea, one of the Elder Gods, resisted the temptation of power and warfare, but she knew that she had to do something. No other life forms on Earth could thrive while the Elder Gods were stuck in a perpetual monster. She summoned the life-giving Demiurge and conceived within it a force for good that would be powerful enough to stand up to Elder Gods.

Out of Gaea’s desperation and Demiruge’s potential, Atum was born. Atum was the manifestation of the sun, and his power was so great he managed to deal with demonic Elder Gods with great efficiency. But the more of the Elder Gods Atum consumed, the more his own form became monstrous and hideous due to the residual darkness within him. Eventually, Atom was transformed into Demogorge.

The birth of Atum

Following the great purge, out of the many Elder Gods, only Gaea was allowed to return to the Earth. All the rest that survived the purge, like Cthon, were forced to escape, but before Cthon escaped this reality, he created a parchment of great power and evil, today known as Darkhold, through which he would stay connected to Earth.

As Cthon was opening a portal to escape into the Nether-Dimensions, Demogorge rose to slay him, but Cthon managed to escape. Chton’s escape basically freed Demogorge from his sacred duty to slay all demonic Elder Gods, and he was transformed into the sun god – Atum once again.

Demogorge becomes Atom again

After both Demogorge and Elder Gods left the Earth’s surface, all other forms of life could finally thrive, and after several eons, Humans appeared, taking over the role of the highest forms of life on Earth.

How powerful is Demiurge?

It’s difficult to judge Demiurge’s powers and abilities because it’s more of a passive sentient force than a being that would consider entering combat. Demiurge’s powers were never explained in all that much detail, and basically, all that we know is that it had the powers of creation. Hence Demiurge is extremely powerful, but not because of the reason you would assume.

Demiurge has the powers of life creation and molecular alteration, but there really is no way to do anything with them in an offensive way as it seems that it only has the power to create and not necessarily the power to destroy.

Demiurge was unable to deal with Elder Gods effectively. This was something that Gaea had to do since her powers were more active in nature. Gaea and Demiurge managed to spawn Atom, but still, the two of them didn’t physically take part in a battle against Elder Gods.

So, Demiurge is extremely powerful, but not in a conventional way.
