Where Are Aemond and Vhagar Hiding in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Episode 4

House of the Dragon‘ fans spent this week’s episode chasing a mystery that even the show’s own characters couldn’t solve. Where did Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar actually go.

The answer, as it turns out, is a whole lot of nothing, and that nothingness is the point.

Aemond and Vhagar Vanish from Harrenhal

When Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower finally march their army to Harrenhal expecting to link up with Aemond and Vhagar, they instead find the ashes of the Black garrison Daemon left behind and a very unbothered Alys Rivers waiting for them who informs them that Aemond hightailed it back to King’s Landing because Rhaenyra has seized the throne. That news lands hard, since it means the Greens still have no dragon support to lean on.

Comic Book Club’s recap of the episode backs this up, noting that when Cole’s crew settles into the main room of Harrenhal, they discover Vhagar was there, but the dragon’s nest has been abandoned, suggesting Aemond did flee. So the dragon was definitely at Harrenhal at some point. It just isn’t there anymore.

The timing only deepens the confusion. As one recap points out, Aemond and Vhagar have been missing in action for two episodes now, and it does not take that long to fly from Harrenhal to King’s Landing, meaning he took a detour somewhere along the way.

Alys Rivers Is Hiding More Than She Lets On

Alys claims to know nothing beyond that offhand detail about Aemond leaving, but nobody watching believes her for a second. According to W Magazine’s breakdown of the episode, Alys has done a good job of hiding not only Aemond but also the biggest dragon in the land, since scouts have been unable to find either one during their search.

That is a pretty significant admission for a show that loves to plant its clues quietly. Viewers already know something Criston and Gwayne don’t, because the audience watched Aemond collapse in the previous episode.

Winter Is Coming’s recap lays out the theory bluntly, stating that Alys is lying since audiences last saw Aemond collapsing at her feet with a knife wound in his back, and it is likely she has him secreted away somewhere in the castle while his dragon camps out on the Isle of Faces. That last detail about the Isle of Faces comes from an earlier scene establishing Alys is on friendly terms with the Green Men who live there.

Ormund Hightower Feels the Consequences at Tumbleton

The real fallout from Aemond and Vhagar’s disappearance plays out in Tumbleton, where Ormund Hightower has been banking his entire strategy on the dragon showing up. Winter Is Coming explains that Ormund brought fifteen thousand soldiers into the city as a way to buy himself time for Aemond to arrive and solidify their position, since Rhaenyra cannot flush them out with dragonfire without also killing her own subjects.

That plan collapses fast once word reaches him. Men’s Journal’s recap notes that Ormund throws a temper tantrum while Daeron watches awkwardly, all because Aemond is not flying to Tumbleton to help him. It is a small but telling moment, one that hints at exactly how Ormund treats the people around him when his plans go sideways.

Vulture’s coverage puts it just as plainly, noting that Vhagar is needed to keep control over the city, but the second son is still missing in action, leaving Ormund and everyone else wondering about Aemond’s whereabouts and current status.

The Trailer Teased This Search All Along

The mystery wasn’t exactly hidden from audiences going in. HBO’s own trailer for the episode made the search a central plot thread before the episode even aired. According to Yahoo Entertainment’s trailer breakdown, Gwayne Hightower is shown separately searching for Prince Aemond, declaring that they seek the Prince.

That trailer detail lines up exactly with what plays out onscreen, right down to Gwayne and Criston coming up empty handed at Harrenhal. It is a rare case of the marketing team giving fans a completely honest preview of the episode’s central tension.

So while ‘House of the Dragon’ hasn’t confirmed exactly where Aemond and Vhagar are hiding, the show has made it very clear that Alys Rivers knows more than she is telling anyone. Do you think Vhagar is really tucked away on the Isle of Faces, or is Aemond’s recovery happening somewhere fans haven’t even considered yet.
