Disney’s newest generation of magical teens has fans asking a very specific family tree question, and it centers on one breakout Encanto favorite finally becoming a screen parent.

Descendants: Wicked Wonderland‘ introduces a character whose entire identity is built around his mother, and viewers want the full picture of where he comes from and what that connection means for the franchise going forward.

Luisa Madrigal’s Son Makes His Franchise Debut

Multiple character profiles confirm that Luis Madrigal is the son of Luisa Madrigal from ‘Encanto,’ sharing his mother’s signature ability of super strength as he is the son of Luisa Madrigal from Encanto and shares his mother’s powers of super strength. His very name is a tribute to her, since his name is the masculine version of his mother Luisa Madrigal’s first name.

The character carries visible ties to his mother’s Colombian roots straight into the design of his costume. His outfit reflects Encanto’s Colombian world, with Luis wearing a white tunic, a vest adorned with vibrant flowers and vines, and a depiction of the Miracle Candle that gives the Madrigals their gifts.

There is also a clear physical through line connecting him to the animated original. There is definitely a familial resemblance between Luis and Luisa, despite the jump from animation to live-action, and that connection is part of why his introduction has generated so much attention among longtime ‘Encanto’ fans.

Luis Madrigal’s Father Remains a Mystery

While Luisa’s side of the family is fully accounted for, the identity of Luis’s other parent is still unknown. Disney has not identified Luis’s father, so the movie only confirms his maternal family.

That gap is intentional, at least for now, since the franchise is playing with an altered version of events. Wicked Wonderland follows the altered reality created when Red and Chloe changed history in The Rise of Red, which leaves plenty of room for his backstory to shift depending on how the timeline works.

Coverage of the character has been equally direct about the missing piece of his history. Because Descendants: Wicked Wonderland branches out in its own ways and takes creative license with the stories it is drawing upon, Luis’s backstory isn’t known yet, and it’s not clear who his other parent is or what his relationship with Luisa and the Madrigals is like.

Reporters have also pointed out that ‘Encanto’ itself never gave Luisa a love interest, which makes the question even more open ended. Luisa did not have a love interest in Encanto, so it will be interesting to see whether Descendants: Wicked Wonderland makes any comments on what happened since the animated film ended.

Inside Luis Madrigal’s Powers and Personality

Beyond the family mystery, Luis has been built out as a fully formed character in his own right. Luis Madrigal is athletic, caring, confident, friendly, honest, loyal and strong, traits that mirror the warmth fans associated with Luisa in ‘Encanto.’

His inherited ability has also become a defining part of his arc among the new Auradon Prep crew. Luis has the same super strength associated with Luisa, however, Wicked Wonderland does not explain whether he received a new gift from the Miracle or inherited an existing power, leaving the mechanics of his magic deliberately vague.

He also isn’t just a supporting nod to ‘Encanto.’ Descendants 5 also gives Luis a romantic arc with Red, making him more than an Encanto family connection, and that relationship becomes one of the more talked about threads of the movie.

By the film’s conclusion, his story ties directly into the central conflict. Luis helps Red and the others stop Maddox’s plan, then receives the Queen of Hearts’ approval as his connection with Red deepens, even as his own parentage stays unresolved heading into whatever comes next.

Alexandro Byrd Brings Luis Madrigal to Life

The role belongs to newcomer Alexandro Byrd, who stepped into the Descendants universe for this installment. Alexandro Byrd is an American actor and singer who portrays Luis Madrigal, the son of Luisa Madrigal from Encanto, in Descendants: Wicked Wonderland.

Byrd has spoken about how deeply his own love of ‘Encanto’ shaped his performance. Speaking with Laughing Place, the actor explained that he had watched the film repeatedly and used the gaps in Luisa’s screen time as creative freedom, saying he got to twist the lack of material into something positive that gave him more liberty to bring himself into the character.

He also opened up about the physical demands of joining the franchise, particularly the dance sequences. Byrd admitted he was nervous for the intensive choreography required for the role, describing how choreographer Emilio Dosal threw the routines at the new cast members at a rapid pace before they found their footing.

The emotional weight of joining such a beloved franchise wasn’t lost on him either. Byrd described feeling every emotion balled up into one, saying the newcomers all felt honored and blessed to be part of the movie despite the nerves of stepping into something so established.

Now that ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ has given ‘Encanto’ fans an unexpected next generation to root for, it feels like the perfect moment to ask which theory about Luis’s mystery father you’re rooting for.
