Who’s Hiding Under the Mask? Marvel’s New ‘Latverian Witch’ Costume Has ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fans Losing Their Minds
San Diego Comic Con always delivers a few surprises, but this year’s Marvel booth may have dropped the biggest one yet. Amid a lineup of familiar faces from ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ one costume stopped fans in their tracks, a mysterious figure Marvel is calling the ‘Latverian Witch.’
The character has never appeared on screen before, and nobody outside the studio seems to know exactly who she is. That hasn’t stopped the internet from building theory after theory within hours of the reveal.
The Latverian Witch Costume Debuts at Marvel’s SDCC Booth
San Diego Comic-Con 2026 Preview Night gave fans their first look at this year’s Marvel booth, with the biggest draw being a collection of costumes from the upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which had just released a new trailer and scored a wave of presales that same week. The display included a new ‘Doomsday’ themed Marvel logo alongside costumes for Thor, Cyclops, Gambit, Captain America, Yelena Belova, and Sue Storm, plus a comic accurate Sentinel head.
But it was the Latverian Witch costume, staged against a stained glass window backdrop, that ignited the most debate among attendees. The look echoes Doctor Doom’s visual language from head to toe, with flowing green robes fastened by metallic clasps and a hood partially obscuring a silver face mask. A green belt finished the outfit off with a silver diamond buckle whose meaning has not been explained.
Tucked in among more familiar faces like Yelena, Cyclops, and Gambit, the character’s design sparked a wave of theories that spread across social media within hours of the first photos surfacing. The reveal was first shared by the account MCU Film News, which posted a close up breakdown of the mask and costume credited to original photography by MCU_Direct.
Fan Theories Point Straight at Scarlet Witch
Fans immediately connected the reveal to Elizabeth Olsen, who has stayed absent from the MCU since Wanda Maximoff’s apparent death in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ back in 2022. A growing chorus of theorists now argues the Latverian Witch could represent her return, not as the Sokovian born Avenger fans know, but as a variant recruited directly by Doom and reimagined with Latverian roots instead.
Fan accounts began circulating side by side images pairing the new costume with a classic green cloaked sorceress from Marvel’s comics and a photo of Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, framing it as a case of hiding in plain sight rather than introducing someone new.
One social media user summed up the sentiment perfectly before catching herself mid tweet, joking that it was probably just a random witch before immediately reconsidering.
Adding fuel to the fire, the studio also unveiled a Doctor Doom action figure fitted with red energy attachments, a color long associated with Wanda’s chaos magic. Under this theory, Doom, himself a practitioner of sorcery in the comics, could weaponize her reality bending chaos magic to accelerate his multiversal campaign.
Could the Latverian Witch Be Someone From Doctor Doom’s Comic History Instead
Not every theory points to Wanda Maximoff. Another possibility floating around is that the costume actually belongs to Doom’s mother, Cynthia von Doom, whose magical ties would still make sense given that she was bestowed powers after making a deal with Mephisto.
In the comics, Doom later attempts to rescue her soul from Mephisto’s realm, eventually succeeding with help from Doctor Strange, and some fans wonder if the film could explore a version of that storyline.
Separately, other insiders claim Doom will enter ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as a family man, positioning the Latverian Witch as his wife. Her early death, according to these rumors, could shatter his composure and drive his destructive rampage across realities.
There’s also a separate rumor floating around suggesting one of these witches could actually be a shape shifter who takes the form of Peggy Carter in an attempt to fool Steve Rogers, adding yet another layer to the mystery. With so many competing threads, it’s clear Marvel has succeeded in making this costume the talk of the convention.
What This Means for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’s’ Ever-Growing Cast
During the convention’s preview night, several outlets got the chance to check out the Marvel booth in person, confirming the Latverian Witch had never previously been shown despite clearly evoking the look of Doctor Doom. Nearby sections of the booth were themed around Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, alongside more X-Men merchandise and a Wolverine photo opportunity tied to the upcoming Insomniac Games release arriving in September.
As of now, the lore behind this new character has not been officially revealed by the studio. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ releases December 18, with Robert Downey Jr. leading as Victor Von Doom alongside the combined ranks of the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four.
Whether the Latverian Witch turns out to be Wanda Maximoff reborn, Doom’s tragic mother, his grieving widow, or someone else entirely, Marvel has clearly built this reveal to keep fans guessing for months. Do you think this mysterious figure is secretly Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch in disguise, or is Marvel cooking up someone new entirely for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’?
