Why Daeron Targaryen’s Brown Hair Is Breaking Targaryen Tradition in ‘House of the Dragon’
‘House of the Dragon‘ has always leaned on one visual shorthand to signal Valyrian blood, that unmistakable silver white hair passed down through generations of the Targaryen line. So when Prince Daeron finally made his on screen debut, fans immediately clocked something was off, and it had nothing to do with plot armor.
Instead of the platinum locks shared by his siblings, Daeron showed up with reddish brown hair, and the internet had feelings about it.
Daeron Targaryen’s Hair Color Sparks Social Media Frenzy
Daeron’s debut in House of the Dragon Season 3 features a major change in his hair color, deviating from the traditional silver color of Targaryens. Fans took to social media in droves, and reactions ranged from confusion to outright denial that the brown haired figure was even him.
Instead of the iconic silver Targaryen locks fans expected, the young prince showed up with a full head of striking ginger or red hair, resonant of his mother rather than the typical Targaryen folks. The scene played out quietly, with Daeron standing behind Lord Ormund Hightower during a tense camp exchange, but eagle eyed viewers spotted the change instantly.

One fan admitted they initially mistook him for a random background character, only realizing later that the redheaded figure was actually the long awaited prince. Others online joked they hoped the whole thing was just a wig that would disappear by the next episode.
Actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, who plays Daeron, received positive attention for capturing the spirit of ‘Daeron the Daring’ from the books despite his brief screen time. Still, the hair color overshadowed nearly every other detail of his introduction.
The Source Material Never Mentioned a Redheaded Prince
The books this saga is based on give fans little room to explain away the change. This is a major change from the source material, where the character was described to have Targaryen’s signature silver hair.
George R.R. Martin offers no indication that Daeron is lacking the silver hair associated with House Targaryen in his source material, and given that all three of his siblings have Valyrian features, it is odd that Daeron wouldn’t share them. That inconsistency is exactly why fans started digging for in universe explanations rather than just chalking it up to a costume department choice.
What makes this scenario all the more perplexing is that Daeron’s brothers, Aemond and Aegon, have white hair, so the show has essentially made him the outlier of the family on screen. That contrast only fueled speculation that something bigger was being set up narratively.
Daeron Targaryen’s Season 3 Storyline Offers a Twist Explanation
As it turns out, the show had an answer waiting a few episodes later. During the third episode of House of the Dragon season 3, viewers learn that Ormund had a boy dye his hair white to make him pass for Daeron and hand him over to Daemon Targaryen.
That reveal cracked the door open for fans theorizing an even bigger swap. It raises the question of what could have stopped Ormund from also dyeing the real Daeron’s white hair brown in order to keep him hidden from the Blacks.
Daeron was sent to Oldtown as a small child, which is why not even his mother Alicent Hightower knows exactly what he looks like now. That detail alone reframes the entire mystery, since even his own family has been kept in the dark about his true appearance for years.
Alicent Hightower’s Motives Behind Sending Daeron Away
Beyond the hair swap theory, some outlets connected Daeron’s coloring directly to Alicent’s parenting choices. His different hair color could invite speculation about his true parentage and lead some to view him as a bastard, which could explain why Alicent sent him away to Oldtown and chose to have him raised among her Hightower relatives rather than alongside his siblings in King’s Landing.
This also casts a different light on Alicent’s accusations against Rhaenyra, whose sons Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are widely believed to be bastards because of their darker features, which are not typically associated with House Targaryen. If Alicent’s own son doesn’t carry the signature silver hair, her past attacks on Rhaenyra’s children suddenly look a lot more hypocritical.
Considering how much the Hightowers care about appearances, it makes Daeron’s absence for much of the show far less surprising. Whether this was a calculated cover up or simply an inherited trait from his mother’s side remains one of the season’s most talked about mysteries.
With Ormund’s hair dye scheme now confirmed on screen and Daeron’s true appearance still shrouded in mystery, do you think the real prince is secretly hiding platinum locks under Ormund’s control, or is Alicent’s son simply a Hightower through and through?
