The question of why Dermot Mulroney is leaving ‘Chicago Fire‘ has been bouncing around fan forums since the news broke. Mulroney, who plays Battalion Chief Dom Pascal, will exit the series during Season 15, and his storyline will be wrapped up early in the season. That is a quick goodbye for a character who stepped into some very big boots.

He joined the cast in Season 13 as the station’s next leader, following the exit of Eamonn Walker’s Wallace Boden after twelve seasons. So what actually pushed Mulroney out of Firehouse 51 after such a short run? Here is everything the reporting has made clear so far, and what it still leaves unanswered.

What We Know About the Dermot Mulroney Exit

The news arrived in a rush. It broke on Friday, July 31, 2026, just days after reports that original cast member Joe Miñoso would also depart early in the new season. TVLine confirmed the exit and noted that Deadline reported it first.

Nobody involved has pointed to a behind the scenes feud or a contract fight. A representative for Mulroney did not immediately respond to a request for comment when the news first surfaced. NBC also declined to comment.

The most direct explanation came from the actor himself. Mulroney addressed the farewell during a panel at Flashback Weekend in Chicago, where he revealed he will be back for one episode and had finished filming it on July 28. He said the show wrote an incredible storyline for him and that the character is written off.

Why Chief Dom Pascal Was Written Off

In plain terms, the exit looks like a story decision. The Season 14 finale brought Mulroney back as Pascal, called in by the CFD brass to try to sway Kelly Severide’s decision, but he was not officially back in the role. Reports say he will appear for one episode to resolve that cliffhanger.

Pascal’s path out of the firehouse was already visible. During the One Chicago crossover he defied a federal agent’s orders to collect evidence at a house fire and ended up in handcuffs, and although the charges were dropped his job hung in the balance. He was later arrested and fired for unbecoming conduct, which set up his hiatus.

That hiatus also gave fans their first clues. Deadline reported he would step away in the second half of Season 14 and could return near the end of the season, and he had been wrestling with budget cuts and toying with a run for public office. At the time it was described only as a leave of absence, which kept the door open. That door now appears to be closing for good.

Dermot Mulroney’s Flashback Weekend Comments

Mulroney did not sound like a man eager to go. He said it was bitter to have to leave, after speaking warmly about becoming friends with an incredible crew. He also noted that some of his castmates had been on the show for fifteen years.

He leaned into the pride he felt in the work as well. Mulroney said the storyline put him as an actor on a high challenge. It was his first experience working on a network television show with a full season of episodes.

There is also the matter of his busy schedule, though that part is speculation. One outlet noted that Mulroney was part of ‘The Hunting Wives’ and suggested his time away gave him room for that project. He is known for films like ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ and ‘The Wedding Date.’ Nothing in the reporting confirms that a scheduling conflict drove the decision.

What Season 15 Cast Changes Mean for Firehouse 51

Mulroney is only one piece of a much bigger shake up. Miñoso is exiting after a handful of episodes, and there is a new showrunner in Victor Teran, who is replacing Andrea Newman. The Season 14 finale aired on May 13 and ended with Cruz and several other firefighters trapped inside a burning storage facility.

Newman had plenty of praise for the character before she left. She described Pascal as the father figure at 51, a chair nobody thought anyone else could sit in after Boden. That makes the empty chief’s office a genuine question for the new season.

There is fresh blood on the way too. ‘All American’ alum Da’Vinchi joins in Season 15 as firefighter candidate Marcus Burke, who is described as roguish and funny. Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo are both set to return after renegotiating their deals. Mayo has already warned that nobody is safe.

The new season arrives on Wednesday, October 7, at 9 p.m. If Pascal’s farewell is as emotional as Mulroney’s comments suggest, do you think one episode is enough to give him the send off he deserves, or should the chief have gone out with a bigger fight at Firehouse 51?
